I would have thought this fine old kiln-fired enamel box was English. Perhaps Bilston, but in fact it is French in origin and is a larger size bonboniere or bonbon box. A white enamel ground trimmed out in navy blue, with floral bouquets surrounding the bulbous bottom half and a charming pair of lovers depicted up top on the lid. Some roughness of age showing on the bottom rim, where it's rubbed surfaces over time, but no chips or cracks or other flaws to note on this fine pot-like box. Nicely fitted, the top fits perfectly and closes snug and tight, yet is easily opened. I've written time and again about how difficult this process is. One'paints' on the enamel powders which are suspended in a liquid medium that aids in application, but all of the colors are muddy mauve, grey, taupe and blues and nothing at all like the colors that emerge once the kiln has melted the enamel powders into the thick glassine finish that some mistake for porcelain. The work is done on a metal plaque, or in this case, a copper or brass forming the bottom and the top of this box. The artist is apprenticed for years and years before he/she is adept enough at this arduous and painstaking process to eventuate a finished product like the one we have here. Quite unique, different from many of the enameled boxes we've had over time, and all the more wonderful for its differences. C1900 FRENCH GRAND TOUR 18K GOLD ETUI NECESSAIRE SOUVENIR CASE MIRROR& TOOLS This listing is for an antique. Circa 1900, French Grand Tour Souvenir etui or necessaire case. This is from the estate of Monique Uzielli a European aristocrat who passed away in 2011 at the age of 98. She was the owner of a 5th Avenue New York penthouse which is now on the market for 27.5 million dollars. The case measures 3 by 2 1/4 inches and is 1/2inch thick or 75 by 40 by 12 mm. The outside of the case is in a material that I am not familiar with. However it looks like gutta percha. It is mounted on an 18 karat gold frame. Both the front and back of the case have an inset decoration of gold and silver showing two fancy birds in a garden setting. The cover of the case is hinged. Inside there is a variety of tools etc. They are an 18k gold framed mirror. ... moreAn 18k gold needle, a 14k gold tipped pencil and a 14k gold tipped steel toothpick. There is also an 18k gold riveted folding ox bone pad. All of these tools are set in an 18k gold fitted frame. Notice the inside of the case is all in 18k gold and quite thick. It is impossible to estimate gold weight here because of the outer case. Mirror glass, silver and steel catch, hinge etc, make that not possible. But the total weight of the case is 61.8 pennyweights or 96.1 grams. All the gold has been tested and of course is guaranteed to be as advertised. The condition is as follows. Overall it is excellent. There are no missing tools, the hinge is tight and sound and the case apart from some very minor scratches is in good condition there is however, a small hairline crack at the back top case. However the two inset gold and silver decorations(the birds in the garden) have been crudely reglued in place and have raised somewhat. This should be attended to and fixed by any competent jeweler. Just a very tiny hole at the mop, otherwise very good, open and close very well, without the tools. I was always going to complete but never got around to it. Condition: Etui is in fair condition considerate of age. As it probably dates to the late 1700's- early 1800's, and is in need of some professional restoration. Shagreen is separated in some areas. Here I am offering a lovely antique enamel box. Most likely Bilston or Staffortshire. Opens to reveal two compartments. May have been for scent or perfume bottles, now missing. Beautifully decorated with urns and flowers in the cartouches and red lettuce work on white background with leave decorations. Size: Closed 2 1/4" high. A little under 1 1/2" wide and 3/4" deep. Condition: Good antique condition. Looks excellent on the first view, but has on top, bottom, one top side and inside enamel losses. Front, back and the other side are in lovely condition. The center MOP Egg Casket measures approximately 1 1/2" tall is about 2 1/2" wide. The brass frame of the Cart is approximately 5 1/4" wide. The length of the Alabaster Plinth measures 4 1/4" and has a 2 1/2" width. The MOP cylinder container measures approximately a little less than 2" tall. Condition: The two Mother of Pearl half shells which form the Egg/ Box are in good overall condition. Showing lovely pearlescent rainbow colored shimmer. Perhaps Bilston, but in fact it is French in origin and is a larger size bonboniere or bonbon box. A white enamel ground trimmed out in navy blue, with floral bouquets surrounding the bulbous bottom half and a charming pair of lovers depicted up top on the lid. Some roughness of age showing on the bottom rim, where it's rubbed surfaces over time, but no chips or cracks or other ... moreflaws to note on this fine pot-like box. Nicely fitted, the top fits perfectly and closes snug and tight, yet is easily opened. I've written time and again about how difficult this process is. One'paints' on the enamel powders which are suspended in a liquid medium that aids in application, but all of the colors are muddy mauve, grey, taupe and blues and nothing at all like the colors that emerge once the kiln has melted the enamel powders into the thick glassine finish that some mistake for porcelain. The work is done on a metal plaque, or in this case, a copper or brass forming the bottom and the top of this box. The artist is apprenticed for years and years before he/she is adept enough at this arduous and painstaking process to eventuate a finished product like the one we have here. Quite unique, different from many of the enameled boxes we've had over time, and all the more wonderful for its differences. Antique PALAIS ROYAL Ormolu Sewing Etui Thimble Holder, Peacock on Swing
Description ANTIQUE FRENCH PALAIS ROYAL SEWING ACCESSORY Whimsical antique French Palais Royal sewing etui thimble holder accessory measuring approximately 5" long and 3-1/2" tall. Oval base is covered in original faded gold velvet. Accented with a variety of stamped ormolu oak leaves and acorns- the slight dome shape of the base is capped with a lovely brass piece finished in an overall stamped pattern of scrollwork and plumes. A variety of realistic brass leaves, flower heads and even an acorn climb up the sturdy wire handle which is twisted into a loop on top- guessing design was meant to hold a thimble. Three hand made, lightly tinted porcelain flowers coil here and there- a wonderful, exotic bird- appears to be a peacock- is suspended on a wire swing from a single flower head as shown- the birds wings are raised, tail feathers ... moresplayed and it even sports a tiny crown or crest- just beautifully detailed, whimsical and designed to delight. Condition is very good with loss to many of the tiny porcelain flower petals- only one of the three heads is still complete. Loss of some fine brass flower leaves and general fading of the gilding to a soft bronzy color- believe the velvet was a more vibrant gold at one time as well. A small portion of the original material covering the underside has worn away revealing the wood form with inset metal slag weight underneath. All in all a delightful little piece- beautifully designed and detailed- please note the gilding is flashing a bit brighter in the photos. Lovely addition to any collection or display! If questions.
