Here's a very unique antique papier mache writing slope. Ecritoire or lap desk, rich gold enamel accenting around the edges and a large circular medallion in the lid! In the style of the old Grand Tour works, some with eglomise or reverse painted glass panels depicting world famous architectural wonders and souvenirs for the Grand Tour travelers. This one without an insert, though it has the appearance of one. The entire lid panel is solid, formed with the raised circular border and convex center panel AND beautifully hand painted with a garden theme! A variety of plants& flowers, all beautifully detailed, with an egg-filled nest to boot! Definitely a Springtime scene, full of new growth and new life! The painting is a bit yellow in appearance, a result of the clearcoat protectant that the ebeniste put over the original oil painting for preservation. A glorious piece, complete and original inside& out. The fitted spaces inside include two spaces for inkwells(not there- relatively easy to replace, however) and a gold accented convex pen tray, removable for implements or stamps storage beneath. The upper half of the writing surface also folds up to a stationery compartment below. What a beauty! Very good condition. With a nod to the age and usually fragile nature of papier mache. In remarkable condition really. The surface has a lustrous jet black finish, hardly a sign of crackling or crazing and only the tiniest nip or two. A slight scratch or two on the painting and some wear to the gold enamel accenting. There may be a repair at the right side

Offered- A very nicely framed Scottish Victorian-era Tartanware Album or Book Cover. The beautiful Tartanware cover measures 7 inches by 4 1/2 inches. The tartan piece is in absolute pristine condition. There is an oval photo of a Church or Monument set into the tartan pattern. There are Mother of Pearl discs on each corner- which are held in place by brass nails. Sorry- but I do not know the name of the Church or Monument shown. There is no Clan indicated on the Tartan. The tartan piece is framed in a very handsome solid Mahogany frame. The over-all dimensions of the frame are 12 1/4 inches by 10 1/4 inches and it is 1 1/4 inch think. Antique French Victorian era Ladies Leather over Wood Portmanteau - Suitcase
This is a beautifully preserved French Leather over Wood Ladies Portmanteau or Suitcase. This is a Victorian piece that I would date at the late 1800s. The piece measures 22 1/2 inches in length- 8 1/4 inches in width- and stands 11 1/2 inches tall. The piece is very light at around 4 pounds. The interior of the piece is covered in a Black and Gray linen type material. The interior consists of 2 equal sides- with a stiff divider in between. The divider has leather straps which connect to buckles- and a black envelope for storage. The interior is in good. Clean condition commensurate with age. There is very slight fraying of the linen interior. The exterior is extraordinary- Beautiful stenciled leather in a rich Amber color with Black stenciling. There is an intact Brass Lock- but I do not have the Key. The straps across the top are connected ... moreto the back of the case with rivets- the straps are in good condition but the ends- where they meet the buckles- are fragile. I stabilized one of the strap-ends with strapping tape on the underside to insure that it does not deteriorate further. There is a very nice applied"Window" on the top of the case- which I am assuming is for Identification. Signed by 2 different artists! The first artist. Signed J Sala(Juan Jean Sala Gabriel) was born in 1867 in Barcelona. Spain who died in 1918 in Paris, France. He attended the school of fine arts in Barcelona then traveled in Italy before moving to Paris in 1890 where he continued his training in the workshops of painters Pascal Dagvian-Bouveret and Gustave Courtois. He exhibited at fairs in the Societe Nationale Des Beaux Arts from 1893-1914& he was awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 World's fair. Eclectric painter. His inspiration is diverse.
