Great and Unusual Antique Faux Tortoise Shell Gold Inlaid Compact Eyeglass Case
This is a unique and interesting find fresh out of an estate. I believe it is an eyeglass case but it could also be used as a small purse or cigarette case. It appears to be faux tortoiseshell with gold filled accents and decorations. There is a crest. Which has a slight dent in it, with a monogram which appears to be"GFM" Please use your judgment. The case has a piano hinge which is strong and secure. The clasp still functions properly. It also expands slightly like an accordion to accommodate the contents. The exquisite craftsmanship of this faux tortoise shell French necessaire or note book is evident all over. The front is delicately inlaid with gold and abalone cartouches and flowers as well as three dainty tendrils that flow down to end in small drops of abalone. The piece has three moire silk loops. Which are held together with a dainty pencil. The inside is lined with the same butterscotch moire silk. The condition of this piece is excellent, all the inlays are secure and not loose or lifting and the silk lining is in excellent condition. The only flaws I see are a small flake to the side of the front and some very minor wear to the silk where the pencil slides in(the pencil also has some loss of paint) This is a piece worthy of any collection and could also be used: standard business cards fit perfectly. This is a framed group of two tortoise shell instruments as well as a Japanese folk lute. All the pieces are hand made. The tortoise shell pieces are a mandolin and a guitar. The lute is 8 ½ inches long and it is made of wood. The frame is a shadow bow with Japanese fabric in the background. The shadow box is 11 ¾ inches wide. 21 ¾ inches long and 2 ½ inches high. The outside of the frame is gold in color. The mandolin has some loss on each side. The strings on the two tortoise instruments are not straight. There is no damage visible but we have not removed them from the frame.

Over 100 years old and is the only known recorded mother of pearl handled comb of this style that survived. Victorian Antique Sailors Shell Art Box w Pin Cushion Detail, Leaf Shape, V Nice
This is a Victorian era sailors shell art box. Possibly originally sold holding candy but intended for use later as a sewing box(see pin cushion on the lid) These decorative boxes were originally assembled by English sailors as they sailed the warm climates of the Caribbean and South Seas. The exotic shells were glued(read plastered) onto boxes and were carried back to sweethearts and family members. This primitive folk art matured into a more sophisticated industry.boxes would have included silk-covered pin cushions with a resort's name printed on it, photos of ships and famous boardwalks or other landmarks on the lids, as well as colored seed-like shells and pretty colored paper covering the sides. Hand mirrors, picture frames and other fanciful boxes shaped like crowns, miniature dressers or picnic hampers expanded the decorative line. ... moreThe bottoms of the boxes were often covered in a faux bois-patterned paper. Inside there could be dividers for thread or needles. This particular box is in beautiful condition; it has three large-ish clams shells on the top in addition to a variety of other small snail. Crab and clam shells and one mussel shell. The paper covering the sides is a familiar diamond pattern for these boxes; it has retained its rich coloring. See the photos for the condition of the pin cushion: there is a bit of dark staining on the silk but the color is still a deep pink. The leaf shape adds some interest as do the myriad of tiny shells that troop around the edges of the lid and base.they are uniform and all appear original. The lid lifts about half way up; we warn against too frequent lifting of the lid.these handworked pieces are over 100 years old and have earned the right to be decorative rather than working boxes. On offer is a wonderful mother of pearl shell serving dish which was originally intended for caviar. It measures 16.3 cm in diameter. It has a beautiful etched border indicating it was made for the higher end of the market. Mother of pearl shell is one of the few materials that do not react with caviar and is the best way to serve this delicacy. The base has a flattened section to allow it to sit flat. The brown on the base is a bit of outer shell was not polished off to allow a stable base.
