I found this lovely weathered Benitier at a nearby French Chateau sale standing in the redundant chapel doorway and just had to save it! I think it maybe lead but not sure. Very difficult to come by and a precious piece of history to preserve! Rare antique French champlevé enameled holy water font(Angels. Shroud of Turin) It's from 1880-1900 and has an incredible enamel work with angels. There is a very detailed hand painted porcelain of the Shroud of Turin held by both angels. The base is made with 3 layers of ebony and even though there are some cracks on it(see photos) the piece is very sturdy. This is an amazing and unique piece. Size: 11" L x 5" 3/4. In excellent used condition, once gold gilded this has now worn to an old warm gold patina that just can't be replicated. Showing a beautiful sharp depiction of the Madonna with 3 winged angels heads at her feet. Surrounded in scrolls and curls topped with the Sacred Heart and a shell font at the base. The font shows obvious signs of use and has started to virdigris, the velvet and has worn in places(all perfect in my eyes) It is all secure and sits on a wooden velvet covered shield.
