I really like this. In spite of not knowing its history or specific original purpose. It just seems to me right out of The Music Man. Rigid old baton. Tightly woven and probably lacquered, 15 ½” long with a sold woven ball at each end. I’m sure it was originally bright white and gold, but it has darkened to a dusky, comfortable color. I can think of about a dozen decorative uses for it. Excellent condition; tight, solid, and well-made, and having a little sense of humor, at least now; no dents, raveling, stains, or repair. Incredible Antique Mexican Nicho & Santo Fabulous Orig. Paint + Folk Style
I found this beautiful nicho in a flea market in Mexico City. It probably originated in rural Oaxaca or in the Huasteca region of Northeastern Mexico. In both places it is possible to find this same exuberant use of color and decoration. I especially love the botanical urns on the doors. There is an irrepressible spirit. A joy in color and form that makes this piece practically sing. This nicho probably dates to the first quarter of the 20th century. It may have been used in a small village church. Though it could also have been used on the home altar. The nicho itself is made of scrap wood, the doors held on with wire twists, these were missing on one door, which is now held in place with new wire. The figure is carved and painted wood, and wears a painted paper cloak and carries a small straw basket. Because of the cloak and the basket, ... morethis is probably meant to represent El Nino de Atocha. If so, he has lost his staff, water gourd and wide-brimmed hat. According to legend one day a child appeared at the prison in Atocha. Spain. This was during the Moorish occupation of Spain, and the Christian prisoners were denied food and water; only children under twelve were allowed to come and care for them. The child, dressed as a pilgrim, was carrying a water gourd and a basket of food. He was allowed to enter and to go from cell to cell giving food and water to the miserable prisoners. No matter how much anyone drank or ate, the child's water gourd was never emptied and his basket of bread remained full. He returned day after day, keeping the prisoners alive and bringing them comfort and cheer. The women of Atocha whose husbands and sons filled the prison believed that this mysterious and merciful child was the infant Jesus himself. Beautiful as it is. This nicho has condition issues which make it extremely fragile. Old insect damage has practically hollowed out the wood of the back and the left side of the nicho. 18th C. Antique Chest, Vibrant 19th C. Grain Paint, Orig. Hardware, Unrestored
This is an 18th C. chest that was intricately grain painted in the early to mid 19th C. The grain painted hardware. And almost all of the fasteners, appear to be original to the chest. The chest is 47"W, 23.5"D, 17"H(not counting the casters) and perhaps 100 lbs. The chest is functional and extremely solid with grain painted metal corners and edges. However, it is ~230+ years old and there are condition issues. The right hinge has been repaired with a modern bolt. Also, there is a ~2" area of the left rear top that has been weakened by the open till door and potential water exposure. Surprisingly, there is very little movement, or play, in the hinges. The original feet are missing and very old casters are in their place. There are areas of missing paint, particularly the left top. Please see the pictures, and request others ... moreif you would like to see more detail. If desired, each of these condition issues(including the missing paint) could be resolved by a skilled furniture restorer. Others may enjoy the chest as it is. GE Occil. 3Sp. 18"cage X 21" T Wants To Work, But Stalls. Orig.Paint Needs Wired
This is a nice original GE brass blade fan. The pictures should say it all. When I plugged it in I heard the motor humming and the blades would turn a little then slow down. Then turn a little, then slow down. No heat or oily smell so I'm thinking somebody in the know could easily fix this. Obviously needs re wiring, the bottom plate gone and things look a little brittle down there. Otherwise the paint is almost pristine and the blades are straight and pretty. The switch is a rooster head. Any that are painted with colors do not have the original paint. In the late 1960's Hurbert Whitings' wife did paint some of the old banks. The one on the cover of the old Whiting bank book is repainted with bright colors. But remember in the 1960's who knew? Two chairs and a hutch. It's all a wonderful folk art style with green paint. We think the paint is original and don't see any signs of other colors. It appears to be made from pine as you can see on the back of the hutch. The hutch is a step back cupboard and has two doors up above, two little drawers down below, and two doors below that. The upper doors have glass and one side's glass is missing. The stepback has neat old hardware that was painted over. The table is a simple cross base table with two little chairs. The entire set is old but we don't know how old. You make the call on whether you'd call this Antique, ... morePrimitive, or Vintage. We don't know but it looks antique to us. The top of the table has a crack in it and some residue from tape or something. The entire set has nicks, dings, chips and scrapes. There are also some worm holes on and under the pieces. Including a full, smiling face, uniform buttons, pockets, belt, and name tag; the name‘Bob’ is written on the tag, probably added by someone at the gas station itself. Embossed on the back, Harris Bros. Filling Station. The paint around the inside of the coin slot is undisturbed, so it’s likely the bank was never used, or used rarely and carefully. Painted on the bottom; unsigned. The back and front can probably be aligned more perfectly, but I can’t budge the screw in the back, because the slot is a little flattened. LARGE 31" x 11" x 3/4" P AINTED" MINNOWS" TRADE SHOP FISHING BAIT SIGN. ORIGINAL PAINT. HAND-CARVED WOOD FROM ONE WIDE P LANK. CLASSIC AMERI CAN FOLK ART. One of the last from my collection. Condition is very good with a few scrapes on the back. Minor edge chipping, and one old hammer head ding around the tail mounting hole. The fish body has paint wear on both sides, photo 3 shows the worst where the"S" bends around the body curve. There are no repairs or missing parts. Check the photos carefully and ask any questions before bidding. This is a one-sided sign. Back is uncarved with plain paint. There are a pair of nail/screw holes where it was attached to a shop wall- I slipped the holes over small nails for the photos. Fish is carved into bas-relief with rounding; very detailed head and mouth(photo 2) All ... morefins are carved lower as in photos and retain the original scoop-curved wood chisel marks. Wood is all of a single wide& long solid plank. Paint is original and weathered/chipped/pockmarked/pitted but mostly intact. Sign and lettering were hand painted- brush marks show. Not stencil and spray paint. Letters are general balloon type, nothing fancy, pockmarked and eroded but still strong and legible. Eye is amazingly effective in its simplicity. It" POPS" in designer crowd speak. Paint color is a very dirty white(photo 4 and others) Some loss of paint as in the photos. Eye is has a black pupil, dark socket, and a patchy-worn brownish iris. Very cool looking, and real minnows do have that huge bug-eyed look. Maker and original bait shop unknown. There is RTP chisled in the back and then. RARELY SEEN ANTIQUE BRONZE CLAD BOY GIRL BOOKENDS BY POMPEIAN BRONZE ORIG. PAINT
Wonderful bookends comprising different but complementary pieces of a boy and a girl. Each seated on a solid bench, heads titled up, clearly watching something. The benches are decorated on the fronts and sides with images of giraffes, mounted knights in armor, and a few others I can't make out. While my pieces do not appear to bear the artist's name, there is an on-line collection which has this same set and states it is signed by the listed artist, Paul Herzel. These were electro-formed(more commonly known as bronze-clad) A manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze or copper was made to adhere to a plaster form by the chemical process of electro-plating. The indentations on the bottoms show the"wicks" the metal loops by which the pieces were suspended in a vat of some solution. A handful of companies used this method ... morein the early 1900's to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces but were still affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze. No maker's mark(there would have been foil labels on the bottoms) But the colors are typical for Pompeian Bronze. Circa 1920. Condition is pretty good for their age. But they surely do show that age. Some mashed corners, mashed nose on the girl, mashed forehead on the boy, a crack in the front edge of the base of the girl, and miscellaneous small dings and dents. And in the mid-sections of both, what looks to be either loss of some surface finish or maybe loss of cladding. See photos near the end of my series. Paint is original and does show wear but otherwise mostly is intact. So. Yes, there are flaws and damage, but it all is small-scale and really only visible up close. Step back about 3 feet, and what you see is a charming and unusual set of colorful bookends. 6 inches tall; 3 3/4 inches wide; 3 1/8 inches deep. And fairly heavy at 2 pounds EACH PIECE. This is a lovely original antique Victorian circa 1800s clock pendulum with a raised relief embossing of art nouveau designs in flowers and scrolls-see pics. The piece is weighted and the back plate appears to be cast iron(see closeup pic provided) The fancy embossed art nouveau plate under the center dial looks to be either brass or tin and has a lovely art nouveau embossed floral& scroll design(see pics) The bottom bar is racheted with threads for the intact& original undamaged dial which is present to travel up and down properly and easily(see pics) The top bar has its undamaged hole for hanging in clock. The piece is large and in charge and weighs approx. 8 oz. it measures approx. 7.25" tall x 2.5" ... morewide. Wonderful bookends depicting a Renaissance minstrel strumming his lute. The figures are cast in gray metal and given celluloid faces. They sit on marble(I think) bases. No maker's mark. But the Collector's Encyclopedia of Bookends attributes these to J B Hirsch, circa 1925. The figures are secured to their bases by screws which can be seen in the bottoms. The figures are secured firmly, without wiggle. Condition is mint. No damage whatsoever to the figures. Nothing bent, dented, broken off or glued back on. Many of these bookends lost their celluloid components over the years, but not so with these. Also worth noting: the noses are fully intact. And finally, the bases themselves are free of chips. This is a pair of the finest antique miniature canoe paddles I have had. They are very thin and elegant with original first red paint. Each measures 15 1/2" long with blade width of 2 1/4" at widest. They are both in stunning condition except one has a small chip on top of handle and it also may have an old crack but hard to say as the paint is very crazed. This very nice little cabinet. It measures 20" W x 12.5" D x 11" H and weighs 15 lbs. It has 3 drawers that measure 17" W x 9.5" D x 1.5" H each. The top space under the lid measures 18" W x 9.5" D x 3" H. The drawers are not dovetailed and the top drawer appears to have been filed down to allow it to slide better. You can see this in the 9th picture. It has a little lock but we don't have the key. On the drawers. The knobs have long screws that stick into the inside of the drawers. But is patchy. Sand painting was an old technique of mixing paint with small amounts of fine sand to yield a rough three-dimensional appearance. Sign and lettering were hand painted- brush marks show. Not stencil and spray paint. Letters are classic for the era, ... morerather fancy shadowed three color, pockmarked, peeled, and eroded but still strong and legible. Lettering background is light tan with dark brown shadowing and fine black pinstripe highlights. Most paint loss is where brush strokes overlapped on the letters. One of the four diamond designs is mostly obscured. Blade is carved to a dull'edge' and is painted dirty white-gray to mimic metal. This primitive settle table/bench is a great country piece with traces of original paint showing. The top tilts up to reveal a bench with storage compartment. It measures 29" high with a surface of 48" x 33" There is blue paint on the interior and white and green paint on the outside areas. It has been stripped of most of the paint but still has a fantastic look. 2 of the pins are original and 2 are new. Pickup is preferred but we do have a shipper available. Condition is very good with the usual and expected chipped. Scratched, dirty, and roughed up paint on the body and legs. There are no repairs or missing parts(though the antenna is likely a replacement. Check the photos carefully and ask any questions before bidding. Grasshopper is carved into bas-relief with rounded body and legs plus separations between abdomen segments. Main body is all of a single wide& long solid dense plank. Legs and eyes are strongly attached from the back by screws- see last photo. Large jumping leg is two secured pieces. Allowing the grain to run lengthwise in each for strength. The joint is invisible from the front. Two screw holes were used to wall mount the ... moresign(photo 4 shows one, other is below the jumping leg'knee. Both have minor rust stains. For the photos I hung the sign by slipping the holes over a pair of nails. There is no damage or rot at the holes, old screw threads show inside. Paint is original and weathered/chipped/pockmarked/pitted but generally intact. Sign and lettering were hand painted- brush marks show. Not stencil and spray paint. The letters are old-school quality- chic with'pop' pockmarks, and wear, but are still strong and legible. Characters are cream white-tan with brown shadowing and black pinstriped highlights. BROWN PAINT– marked 1798 Wonderful primitive 6 board pine chest with original brown paint. Original wrought iron hinges, original hand wrought lock with keyhole on the front and hand wrought nails. The initials DR and the year 1798 is burned into the back board and another date appears in paint 1810 thought to be the year the chest was painted as the year is the same color paint as the painted part of the chest. Original brown paint on the top front and sides. 5 boards are ⅞ inch thick and hand planned. The back board slightly thinner and is split horizontally from end to end but not split open. The top left portion has a other split that measures about 11 inches. The overall measurement of the chest is: 22 inches ... moreWide 28 inches High Side board 22 ½ inches Wide Top board is 49 ½ inches Long Across the top front are 3 small nail or screw holes that appear to have been used to prevent the chest from being opened at some point. In spite of where they are positioned they are not particularly noticeable. The top is distressed with a few incomplete dark rings and a couple of random scrapes and irregularities in the paint. Normal and minor wear and tear for a piece of this age. Inside is clean and in excellent condition. The nails are hand wrought as are the hinges and as is the lock. This large two foot tall sign was attached vertically next to(we may assume) the front door of Mrs. Luft's boarding house/dressmaker's shop. This item is from an estate auction in the Utica region of New York State. I bought the sign in the late 80's/early 90's and have no other information about Mrs. Luft. The sign maker, or sign age. Note in photos 5. 6, and 7 that water collected on the bottom trim sill. Causing water stains. I did a thumbnail test and found no rot. There are two threaded screw holes where the sign attached to the home. Although there is abundant chipping and pockmarking of paint. The lettering is still very legible. It's a fancier script than many businesses would use and enhances the unique sign shape. All lettering was done by hand- brush marks show, notice the differences between repeated letters- ... moreno stencils for this sign. Dimensions: Overall 23-1/4" tall. 13-1/8" wide, 2-1/2" thick. It's oddly shaped.the attaching board is 2-1/8" x 23-1/4" x 7/8" Main sign is solid 3/4" wood, 16" tall x 12-1/4"wide, less the triangular corner cutout. River location, and mostly the extensive hand work. The sign is two sided. Hand made and carved, with a big gaping mouth. The hanging hook is a bent nail with surrounding rust stains. In the pictures you can see two other vacant holes next to the nail. The form and carving- especially the deep cut fin-spines- are extremely eye catching. Huge four foot long trade sign. Two sided: SAW DOCTOR. ARROT I N O. Had to look up arrotino- Italian for knife sharpener. A s aw doctor doctored by not only sharpening with a file. But'setting' the teeth to make a wider kerf(saw groove) so the saw wouldn't bind. Hand carved and hand painted. Paint is pockmarked and pitted as in the photos. Brush marks show on the lettering. Not stencil and spray paint. Plainish lettering, but rather dramatic colors and shadowing. Sign saw blade is made from one wide 3/4" plank. NOT plywood. And two carved pieces lap over the blade, forming a triple-thickness handle(see pics. The wood grain runs longitudinally for strength. Total sign is 47+" long and 11" at tallest, tapering to 3-3/4 at the blade nose. Handle is 2-3/8 thick. Hand carved and hand painted. Paint is pockmarked and pitted as in the photos. Brush marks show on the lettering. Not stencil and spray paint, all by hand. Note differences between letters on each side. Wear to all paint and letters, but still legible and bold. Most carving detail at the mouth. Painted tin fins attached with brass round-top brads, except caudal(tail) fin is carved wood, same continuous piece as the fish body. There is a hit and miss hint of a groove line top and bottom center, so the body may be two planks joined together. All hand painted in a astounding offset scale dash pattern. Three-color eyes have a surrounding rim. Plus iris and pupils. ... moreFish has the generally proper whitish belly smoothly transitioning into a darker spine. The carving gives the impression of a northern pike. Lettering, despite weathering and pitting, looks sound and solid. Please look at the close-up photos for lettering condition. CONDITION IS OVER ALL VERY GOOD. NO REPAIRS OR ROT. It seems near mint from a distance(photo1) but looking closer(photo 2 + 3) shows the true condition. Usual dings and nicks. Dust, dirt, grime.
