A treasure trove of eighty-three east coast nautical charts. They range from Maine to the Bahamas. Covering most points in between. In good shape for their age; they date from 1968 to 1975. Two or three of them are torn, no water damage, some appear to have been used more than others. I wish I had time to examine them each more closely, but since I don't I'm selling the whole lot. 1915 antique Maritime Steamship Nautical Atlas 27 canvas charts most are 20"x 29
This very large nautical atlas printed in 1915 measures 16" wide x 21" high(weight is 16 pounds) and is titled NEW MERCANTILE MARINE ATLAS- specially designed for Merchant shippers. Exporters& Ocean travelers; published by C.S. Hammond& Co, NYC, 1915. The very first edition of this atlas came out in 1904 and this is the revised 5th edition with additional maps and charts and with more accurate data reports than the earlier editions(NOTE: use scroll bar above to see all 9 close-up photos) This atlas is very comprehensive related to the worlds ocean highways at that time and shows all the major or important sea routes. Compiled from the latest British and foreign Admiralty charts up to that time. There is 27 charts and maps many of which encompass two pages(20 1/2" x 29 1/2" heavy stock paper mounted to canvas backings) ... moreThese show just about everything a mariner would want to have including the exact routes that steamships followed; mail routes; telegraph cable lines; lighthouses and light ship locations; naval stations; ports of call; American and British Consolate locations. Etc. Condition: quite frankly it appears some ship Captain's bratty kid had a temper tandrum to say the least! I will give a brief but somewhat concise condition report since this atlas has too many issues to detail fully: the first six pages which consists of the TITLE page and PREFACE along with the beginning plates that relate to the flags of the world. A commerce chart of the world and the Panama canal and its effects on maritime routes, are damaged and torn or missing sections. The more important plates listed after the TABLE OF CONTENTS or plates 1-27 are in fairly good condition; at least one plate is detached completely from spine; excessive wear to covers with detached spine; plate 8 has crayon marks on it; after plate 27 the index pages are again in poor condition with large tears or missing sections or have crayon marks on them. 26 out of the 27 of the main large plates inside are luckily in fairly n

All of them show typical water depths or soundings displayed in feet. Buoys and channel markers are also shown to aid in navigation of the waterways. Included is one large chart which measures 36 x 48 inches and which shows the eastern Chesapeake Bay including the Annapolis area. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland over to Easton, Maryland. Also included are two Nautical Charts or Maps which measure 30 x 37 inches and both date back 45 years to 1967. Measuring about 45" x 31" this is US Defense Mapping Agency Hydrographic Center Nautical Chart No. 25570: West Indies- Antigua" with the lengthy descriptive sub-title"Western approaches from surveys by HMS Fox 1973. Also Admiralty Surveys of 1848 and 1863. Boon Channel to Parham Harbour from US government surveys of 1940 and 1943. South of Lat. 17 resounded by the Canadian Hydrographic Service 1966. With additions and corrections to 1976. Topography from aerial photographs of 1941-1942. It is dated 1977, and stated to be the First Edition. The scale is 1:50,000. The inset, at a scale of 1:20,000, shows Falmouth Harbour and English Harbour, from Admiralty Surveys of 1847 and 1863 and a Canadian ... moresurvey of 1966. Second. Arnold Karo’ Director What I think is cool about this map/ chart is straight off San Francisco. I see it to be 2,800 fathoms deep. Which are 6 and ½ feet per fathoms = 18.200 feet deep. 4 Vintage Nautical Charts of the AMAZON RIVER - Para (Belem) to Iquitos, Brazil
This lot contains four vintage nautical charts of the Amazon River. So listen up and I'll go through them one by one. The first. Measuring about 42" x 30" is US Navy Hydrographic Office Nautical Chart No. HO 1926-1, which is Part 1 of the three-map set titled"South America- The Amazon River and Tributaries- Para(Belem) to Iquitos. Sure enough the Amazon flows in from the left, with the Xingu and Tocantins Rivers flowing in from the south. Para(or Belem) is just right of the centerfold. It is dated 1919, and stated to be the First Edition, revised through 1958, and with a stamp referencing further corrections through 1960. The scale is not stated. Second is sheet# 2 in the set. With Manaus just left of center where the Negro River flows into the Amazon. And third is chart No. 1926-3. With Iquitos at the far left. This one ... moreis a little smaller than the other two, about 36" x 28" The fourth one measures 46" x 35" and is Sheet No. 1 of a different set that originally contained six charts titled"Amazon River. From Its Para Mouth to Santa Cruz Island. It is a divided map, the right side being a northerly and easterly continuation of the left side. There is a little overlap, therefore the town of Para(or Belem) appears both at the upper right corner of the left side, and at the lower left of the right side. The right side is titled"South Atlantic Ocean- Brazil North Coast- The Mouth of the Para River(The Eastern Branch of the Amazon River) from French, Brazilian and US Naval surveys to 1886. And the left side is"South America- Brazil- The Amazon River from Para(Belem) to Manaus in Six Sheets. Original Survey by the USS Enterprise in 1878. It doesn't go as far as Manaus, of course, extending not much further west than the confluence of the Tocantins River. The westward continuation is presumably covered on the other sheets. Three Vintage Nautical Charts -- Massachusetts Bay, Boston and Boston Harbor
This lot contains three nautical charts of Boston and the surrounding Massachasuetts coastline. Measuring about 46" x 36" The first one is US Coast& Geodetic Survey Nautical Chart No. C&GS 1207, titled"United States- East Coast- Massachusetts- Massachusetts Bay. It is mostly water(the Atlantic Ocean) with the Massachusetts Bay(from Duxbury to Gloucester, with Boston in the middle) forming an arc on the left, and Provincetown and the northern tip of Cape Cod at the lower right. It is dated 1968, and stated to be the 9th Edition. The scale is 1:80,000. The inset(at a scale of 1:20,000) is of the North River. Next. Measuring about 46" x 36" we zero in on Boston with US Coast& Geodetic Survey Nautical Chart No. C&GS 246, titled"United States- East Coast- Massachusetts- Boston Bay. Sure enough, Massachusetts ... moreBay is on the right, Boston on the left, Chelsea at the upper left, and Cohasset at the lower right. It is dated 1967, and stated to be the 31st Edition. The scale is 1:25,000. And lastly. Measuring about 44" x 36" we get an even closer look at Boston with US Coast& Geodetic Survey Nautical Chart No. C&GS 248, titled"United States- East Coast- Massachusetts- Boston Inner Harbor. Sure enough, Boston is in the middle, with Cambridge on the left and Logan Airport on the right. Somerville, Everett and Chelsea are across the top, and Brookline, Roxbury and South Boston along the bottom. It is dated 1967, and stated to be the 23st Edition. The scale is 1:10,000. Apart from two tears at the top edge of the first one. They are in generally very good and usable condition, with some light surface and edge wear and creasing, and maybe a mis-fold or two, and they may also have some ink and/or crayon inscriptions on the back, some of which may have bled through, and perhaps also some notations or corrections on the maps themselves. These came from the collection of an Esso tanker captain, who had the habit of writing at least the chart title and/or number in

So this is the San Juan Islands Washington lot. Instead of giving the map numbers along with title and latest year of printing like I did with the bigger lot.
