The book is in decent condition for it's age with some fraying around the binding and a few pages pulled from the stitching. One of the maps has a slight tear outside the actual image (see Pic). The spine is still tight. This is an ORIGINAL with the maps (including the 6 foldouts) and book plate are all tipped in, making them easily removable. The image area measures 10-1/2" x 15" And the map was engraved by the Matthews-Northrup Company. It depicts the territory of Alaska during the frenzied years shortly after the first gold strikes in the Klondike and near Nome, which brought prospectors in huge numbers. Many of them took steamships to Skagway, where they began their trek by land to the Klondike. Gold and silver lodes, coal mines, and oil wells, printed more than 110 years ago. This map was published less than 10 years after gold was discovered in the Yukon. And it is a wonderful reference to early mining activity in the territory. It also shows the partially completed railroad north of Seward, with a long section parallel to the Susitna River labeled"building. It also shows a railroad from Skagway to White Horse in the Yukon. And it labels the Military Telegraph Line from the Tanana River to St. Michael and across the Norton Sound to Nome, as well as the submarine cable line from Sitka to Valdez. There are dozen of place names. Settlements, and natural features in Alaska and ... morethe Yukon, including Lake Labarge, the setting for Robert Service's famous poem"The Cremation of Sam McGee. The map was engraved by L.L. Poates and is copyrighted © 1907 in the lower margin by Dodd. Mead& Company. It was published in the New Encyclopedic Atlas and Gazetteer, New York.
