A superb quality mid 19c mahogany work/sewing table C1850. The workmanship on this table is of the finest quality with bookmatched flame mahogany veneers and wonderful scollop shell carving to the front and back. Thick raised mouldings to the top. Front and sides with the best spiral tapered legs and support. original cloth underneath and it has the original interior with hand turned cotton's and four lids with covers and other compartments. Pull out deep section drawer and another above with key. In excellent original condition with just an old repair to botton support but stable and firm and the top has a crease where the carcase has moved slightly over the years but is not split and does not detract in any way. The colour and patina are beautiful and would be both decorative and usefull. The allure of this area to furniture makers was due to the accumulation of wealth made on the North Shore of Massachusetts& into the Coastal Region of New Hampshire in the China Trade/Clipper ship industry of the period. Most of Boston's"old money" families from Beacon Hill& The Back Bay area have their roots traced directly back to the North Shore. The boom in the early 19th Century economy of Boston is directly tied to the import& manufacturing of goods connected directly to the Clipper Ship Fleets. The fine furniture produced, as this work table here, was exported all over the world. Some surviving ship's manifests have North Shore furniture being exported as far away as China. We strongly feel this work table was made by the Appletons of Salem. The drawer beneath it has larger, box-like deeper sections for scissors, pin cushions and other sewing needs. The drop leaves and drawers move smoothly and evenly. It is 22 1/2 inches wide, 16 1/2 inches deep, 30 inches high and is in very good condition with no visible repairs or defects, only some age wear very minor, it is structurally very tight and sound. Antique American Federal Work Table/Sewing Stand,Mahogany with Birdseye Maple
This is a Great 1800's Mahogany and Birds Eye or Burled Maple Partners Sewing Stand In this stand there is drawers on either side with a flip up pin cushion. There is two spots on either side of the stand for two yarn balls with Burled or Birdseye Maple holder. They have Ebony wood edge There is a dark wood around the key hole( No Key with this table) common with Federal Furniture. The Top if from one piece of flared mahogany with an early repair( as photo'd) There is Columned legs on this great table with a mahogany bottom board. The Bottom side shows a great patina and early flat head screws.
