While most folks like to think these early flip glasses were made by the Stiegel Glass Works here in Manheim. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania they were actually made in Germany and Switzerland between 1790 and 1840. The Pennsylvania Dutch around these parts were quite fond of them, a small size tumbler with a nice flaring lip and light in weight. Every now and then a good early one can still be found. Rasberry buttons applied to neck. Very fine bell tone ring to the glass. There is a small chip on the underside of the foot. Has a lot of natural wear on the foot. Blue, and Green in color, Heavy glass. Likely from the late 1800's to early 1900's, We are including a bit of Kugel history below for anyone interested, These are just plain COOL, Approximate Size: 3" x 3" x 4 3/4" Condition: minor wear from use and display. Metal has patina, overall great shape The king of the figural Christmas ornament is the“kugel” A term that actually means ball in German. These were first made by German glass crafters durin the Biedermeier period around 1830, according to an Antique Trader article by Karen Knapstein. Those old versions were too heavy to hang on Christmas trees so they were suspended from the ceiling, and actually displayed all year round. After 1855 thinner versions were made and those could be used as holiday ornaments. Collectors usually refer to any thick blown glass ornament with a fixed decorative cap as a kugel. It’s said that these were first sold in America at Woolworth’s variety stores in the 1880s. Antique Dutch German Roemer Wine Glass Wrythen Raspberry Prunts Hollow Stem
A superb Antique Dutch or German Roemer Drinking wine glass. Rippled or wrythen bowl leading to a wrythen twist hollow stem with six large raspberry prunts. Some a little miss-shapen. A large domed foot with a roll over edge and a rough pontil in the base. Many air bubbles within the glass on the foot a couple of tiny white flint chards completely encased in the glass. Stands a little wonky typical of old hand made glass. I cannot find any chips or cracks, this glass has a wonderful ring when the bowl is tapped. Colour is a little darker green than photos show. I am not sure of the age of this glass but all the indicators point to it being antique. Measures approx. 15cm high, 8cm across the base and 6cm across the top of the bowl. A beautiful antique glass. Glass display pink tray, antique, German, atomizer, powder dish, perfume bottle
This is a 4 piece vanity set of etched or crystal pink glass(how depression glass pink looks) Antique. Escht Kristill label on pieces. Early 1900's, German. Brought here during WWII-the only thing a older woman brought from Germany during the war. The tray is rectangle 9 1/2" x 3 3/4" The glass is thick 1/4" The powder dish is 5 1/2" tall x 5" wide. The only*imperfections I see or can feel is on the back edge of the dish the glass is rough. couldn't photograph it. Atomizer is 4" tall x 5" wide. This piece top the rubber is shot but the metal pieces are fine. The perfume bottle is 5" tall x 4 1/2" wide. The top is smooth, no chips and the bottom has no imperfections or damage. The finial(I think it is called) is a perfect fit so is usable as the perfume won't evaporate. There are 4 pieces ... moretotal. It's a gem of a find and will make a unique gift. ANTIQUE NAMED GERMAN BOHEMIAN 7 PANEL AMBER GLASS “SPA” BEAKER WIESBADEN c.1860
This is a very beautiful antique‘Spa’ beaker dating from the mid nineteenth century and commemorative of Wiesbaden. These very collectable beakers. Used for drinking the beneficial waters of the German spa towns, were made with great skill by the famous glass makers and engravers of Bohemia and were acquired as high quality souvenirs by the wealthy patrons of the spas as mementoes of their visits to these elegant venues. This one shows six spa scenes in Wiesbaden, the old Hessian capital and one of the major spa towns of Germany. It is in wonderful condition for its 150 or so years. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. This amber flashed overlay cut glass beaker measures 13.5cms(just under 5.5” tall and 8cms(just over 3” in diameter across the rim and 7.5 cms(about 3” across the base of the foot. It weighs 562 gms. The rich design features ... morethe six exquisitely engraved scenes each set in a circular frame within the six panels. The six scenes are: 1. Hochbrunnen” 2. Kursaal i(Culture Palace) 3. Kolonnade” 4. Teatr” 5. Ker Jahrzeitzen” 6. Und Platte” All are named in gothic script underneath. The seventh panel features a beautifully designed engraved wreath containing the name“John Collett” and the added information“b(Born) Wiesbaden” Mr Collett’s date of birth is not included. The thick amber base supports the main bowl on a thick faceted stem. The base itself is cut in seven decorative shaped sections and the bottom of it has a criss cross pattern. Description Antique German white overlay cut to clear glass sugar or jewelry casket. Decorated with wheel cut geometric forms. Mounted with a finial in the form of flowers and leaves. The hinged mounts engraved with ornate scrolling foliage and centered by an escutcheon lock. Hallmarked for Hamburg with the letter B for Ernst Friedrich Franck which dates it from 1829-1857. Both were called Kugels, though we think only one is. We are stumped on the other, both look to be 19th century pieces. We are putting them up in separate auctions, check them both out. This is the first of the two. It is a silvered glass German Christmas Kugel. 15.5" circumference(5" across approx. great top. For those not familiar with Kugels. We looked up Kugels and found this information on the Christmas ch site on the internet(great site! What is known as kugels are the ancestors of the later Christmas glass ornaments. Kugel is the German word for sphere or ball. In Germany kugels are usually called Biedermeierkugeln what refers to their time of origin. Namely the Biedermeier period(about 1830) At that time German glassmakers started a tradition which lasted almost until to the beginning of World War I. One way to identify kugels is by their enormous thickness of glass. This may go from one up to five millimeters. 1890s German reverse painted glass with multicolor foil ornamentation depicting Psalm 23. In German“Der Herr ist mein Hirte, mir wird nichts mangeln” which translates to“The lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. In original frame overall in excellent condition with bright colors and glass free of cracks or chips, with some chips to frame. Antique World War 1 Era German Austrian Kaiser Wilhelm II Franz Joseph Plate
Up for sale is this German Austrian World War One Era Plate. This plate depicts Kaiser Wilhelm II and Franz Joseph. The writing on the plate is German and roughly translates to“In rough times we firmly and faithfully stick together. War Years 1914-1917" I assume the plate was probably made in Germany but I am not sure. The plate measures approximately 9.75 inches across. The plate is in pretty nice condition considering its age. There are some scratches in the decoration. The biggest spot is on Wilhelm’s face(see pics) There is some wear in the gold gilt decoration as well. I can see no chips or cracks.
