Victorian Antique Wood Gesso Black & Gold Gilt Oval Picture Frame With Mirror
Early Victorian carved wood and gesso frame with mirror in an oval shape being offered in its as is condition. The design is very beautiful but unfortunately the frame has some damages as seen in all the pictures and would need some restoration. Even though it does display a certain shabby chic elegance in its current distressed condition. The frame is oval in shape and it is decorated top. Bottom and both sides with leaves, nuts and berries in a high relief. There is a chis- cross design along the inside edge and the outside section is painted black. The mirror shows some age spots and a long(cut) line that shows through, but this is to be expected on an item this old. The back of the frame is a heavy piece of wood with a rectangular opening that has curved corners inside of which the heavy and thick mirror fits. The mirror is covered with ... morea flat piece of wood which is held in place with small nails. This is an antique oval wood and gesso frame for a picture or mirror. The frame is offered in its as is condition without a glass on the front nor a back cover. The wood is a dark mahogany color and it has a lacquered finish to it. The four centers are decorated with a floral and leaf high relief cluster and the interior oval opening of the frame is gilded. The frame measures 14" X 12" and the oval opening for picture or mirror is 9 1/2" X 7 1/2" The frame displays well. But it does show some wear from age and at one of its longer sides some of the(teeth) pattern gesso is chipped. Rare 1910 Kansas City. Missouri Priests of Pallas Souvenir Pressed Tin Picture Frame/ Vanity Mirror. The Priests of Pallas was a week-long festival held annually in Kansas City from 1887 until 1912. And revived briefly from 1922 to 1924. Festival supporters set out to promote Kansas City’s image as the“Athens of the West” and to parallel other celebrations such as New Orleans's Mardi Gras and St. Louis’s Veiled Prophet. Pallas Athene was the patroness of the festival and motifs were based loosely on figures from Greek mythology. Festivities included parades with ornate floats and numerous concerts and other performances. These festivities culminated with an elegant invitation only masked ball where guests received an official annual souvenir. Only 1.000 souvenirs were made for each year and afterwards the molds were destroyed. Antique Wood Oval Mahogany (?) Picture Mirror Frame 34 x 27~ Handmade~ Post 1940
Beautiful old antique oval frame made with love. The previous owner told me that this frame was made by her grandfather for her grandmother and at that time had placed a mirror in it for her. Post 1940 and originally from West Virginia. Later when the granddaughter inherited it. The mirror was gone so she added a cloth covered plywood board with pegs for hanging her jewelry. She was uncertain as to the type of wood and I believe it to be mahogany. Recently acquired. I have removed the board(save for the wood peg at the back base of the frame. Therefore there are small nail holes on the inside of the frame from where the board was attached. Still has two brass plate hangers on back. The frame has signs of age and use and only tiny separation at two joints. Still a lovely frame that would accentuate any mirror or portrait added. Measures approx. ... more34x27 and is has 2" width. The painting was a rectangle, but someone decided to fit it to this frame, as you can see from the back. I do not see a signature. The frame measures approx. 19.5" X 22.5" The opening is approx. 13.25" X 16.75" There are a couple of broken-off leaves on the gesso frame(one is shown) and there are cracks in the gesso, crazing, and other wear, consistent with age/use. Beautiful. Ornately designed, cast brass oval frame with swing-out easel stand. Unusual vertical oval shape. Has a chubby cherub on each lower side, birds on the top, and flowers, vines, and leaves all around. I think this would be considered"Art Nouveau" style. Measures nearly 15 inches tall, by about 17 inches wide. The oval framing inner area is about 8 7/8 inches tall, by 12 3/4 inches wide, by about 1/4 inch deep. Great for a mirror or landscape picture. There are 4 of the original 6 swing arm wire keepers with screws, in place. At the bottom center, is a swing out stand arm, made of 2 brass parts soldered together. There are also 3"feet" counting the one the stand arm is riveted to, and one on each side. So very important to be upfront about this. This mirror weighs 23 pounds! So Large and HEAVY! That being said, WOW, not for the timid! has great vibe like liberty and mirrors for all, blazing forth! Something about the 4 corner embellishments sort of clam shell with swirls and draping and the shooting sun rays of gilt and bronze just sort of give it a great statement!
