This custom carved and metal leaf frame dates ca. 1915-1935 and comes from a wealthy several- generation Chicago household. It measures 35” x 43” overall with 30 ½” x 38 ¼” 1” deep rabbet and a reveal of 29 ½” x 37 ¼” The pictures speak well for this frame. Showing the crisp hand carving, and stable antique metal leaf surface with warm areas of wear. There are some miter gaps evident. The quality is similar to Newcomb macklin, but I have never seen them use corrugated fasteners on large frames. The wood appears to be pine of some sort and the design is similar to many Foster Brothers. This is a great period molding that would be appropriate for a museum-class artwork. Mid-Century Frame Silver Leaf Metal Gilt 24 x 36 Whistler Style Vintage Wear
For your consideration a silver metal leaf modernist style frame. 25- 30 years old and possibly by Motika Frames. I purchased it in a grouping from a estate sale at an artist's home. Measures 24-1/8 x 36-3/16 inches inside dimensions. Over all outside dimension is 27-3/8 x 39-3/8. The molding is about 2 x 2 with a 1 inch plus rabbit depth. The condition is not like new and I have not cleaned it. It has wear from age and handling throughout. There are some nicks scrapes and wear through the gilt and tarnish. The corners are tight though there is evidence of surface cracks at the joint. In my opinion all the loses give it nice character of age. It is made of bass wood and it is straight with no warping. The frame measures 11 inches in height and 8 ½ inches across. The actual picture opening measures 5 inches by ¾ inches. The back is stamped with the number 08939. The easel piece has broken off. However. There is a new epoxy that just came out last year that will set this piece back in place permanently. Or, you can take a pretty piece of satin ribbon and thread it through the scrolling leaf pattern and hang the frame on the wall. The overall condition is very, very good but for the broken easel back. The original silver patina is worn a very tiny bit due to age but overall shows very, very well.
