Antique French Limoges Enamel on copper Plaque- Portrait of St. Augustine. By Mettie E. Webb, dated 1-5-05 We are pleased to present this lovely French Limoges enamel painted plaque of St. Augustine. The enamel painting utilizes the earlier'grisaille' or grey tone on black style along with the colored enamels on foil technique which was a little later. Also highlighted by a trace amount of gold gilding on the edge of the helmet and used in signing the artist's name and date. The handsome portrait of the man is very well executed by the artist. Mettie E. Webb. We were fortunate in having found this piece along with bits of information that helps us with knowing what the title of the painting was as well as the artist name and date on the front. The remnants of the label attached to the backside reads: No. 73/ LIGHT(I) St. Augustin(e) ... moreBequeathed by METTIE E. WEBB" Please see photos. The plaque is framed in its original decorated frame of gesso wood with a tooled leather liner. Please refer to the photos for the details of the frame and portrait. The backside is worn, faded and has had earlier repairs to the hinge stand. Measurements: The plaque itself measures approximately 5 inches in height x 3 3/4 inches in width. The framed image is approximately 10 inches x 8 1/2 inches. Condition: The enamel plaque is in very good condition with only slight wear to some of the gilding on the helmet. No Chips. Cracks, scratches or repairs or restorations were noted. The frame is another issue in itself. The gesso wood trim surrounding the portrait has a 3/4 inch piece missing. This trim is cracked in several places but the pieces are pretty much still intact. There are small chips and flakes around the edges of the frame as well. The silk material backside is worn and faded. The hinge stand has been repaired earlier, but is again in need of some attention. This listing is for a very pretty. Sculpted, Kiln Fired Enamel box, Possibly Limoges? Most of these I have seen are smooth, top and bottom. This one is formed, sculpted on the top, as well as the sides. It is Black in color, and has a Hand Painted Enamel Foiled Portrait of a Lady with Big, Feathered Hat in the center. The portrait is in the center of a raised 5 Point Star, or Pentagram. The box has raised white enamel detailing. Also gilt, but some is worn off. I see a couple of small spots where the enamel is chipped, high spots on the bottom of box, just below the lifter. SEE PICTURE 13) These are not that noticeable, and could be touched up easily. There is slight wear in spots on the bottom of the box, consistent with age and use. IT MEASURES ABOUT 2" ACROSS BY 1 1/4" HIGH. It snaps shut like it should. The hinge is fine, no damage or repair.
