Antique ABP American Brilliant Crystal Cut Glass Double Knife or Spoon Rests Description: American Brillian t Period glass knife rests are cut and beveled all over. Although the two matching castle shaped rests seem to be by the same maker there are some slight differences. Both are decorated with cut squares or file decorations and curved spoon rest areas. Mid section of one is fancier that the other. The curvature at the ends and clarity are a little different in a side by side comparison of each. One glows light green in UV light and the other doesn't. Both knife rests are in great overall condition with minimal signs of normal use. Edges have a few minor chips which are not obvious and do not distract but are mentioned for accuracy. They measure 3-1/4 inches long and around 1-7/8 inches tall. The third knife rest is decorated with ... morenotched ends and a pattern of blocks along the square midsection. It is in mint condition with no signs of use. It measures 3-5/8 inches long and approximately 3/4 inch tall. Glassware in unmarked. Acquired from an avid collector of ABP cut glass. Decades and decades of use. There are small chips on some of the intersections of the facets on the bells. The wear decreases as the bells taper to the ends, just as you would expect. It is of excellent quality– holding it up to the eye you can turn it like a kaleidoscope and watch the colors reflect in its facets. This knife rest measures just under 4 inches long and weighs 4.4 ounces, so it is an individual-sized rest. It has a very rounded bar but the bells(the ends of this type of knife rest are called“bells” are incredible. The bells are circles, flattened on the base to rest on the table(think of a deflating tire) and consist of alternating frosted and clear patterns. Set in a slighted tilted pattern, the effect swirls around the bells in sort of an art deco pattern, which changes as you turn the rest. This pattern is identified as“St. Hubert. Fashionable in the 19th century. This American Crystal knife rest was part of the William Booth Estate, Governor of State of Colorado, out of Cripple Creek in the late 1800's. American hand cut crystal was very popular among affluent Americans during the last half of the 19th century, and this hand cut lead crystal is an example of the fashion. It is as useful today as it was over a century ago, perhaps not used as frequently, but still useful and definitely a collectible antique.
