Here's a very unique antique papier mache writing slope. Ecritoire or lap desk, rich gold enamel accenting around the edges and a large circular medallion in the lid! In the style of the old Grand Tour works, some with eglomise or reverse painted glass panels depicting world famous architectural wonders and souvenirs for the Grand Tour travelers. This one without an insert, though it has the appearance of one. The entire lid panel is solid, formed with the raised circular border and convex center panel AND beautifully hand painted with a garden theme! A variety of plants& flowers, all beautifully detailed, with an egg-filled nest to boot! Definitely a Springtime scene, full of new growth and new life! The painting is a bit yellow in appearance, a result of the clearcoat protectant that the ebeniste put over the original oil painting for preservation. A glorious piece, complete and original inside& out. The fitted spaces inside include two spaces for inkwells(not there- relatively easy to replace, however) and a gold accented convex pen tray, removable for implements or stamps storage beneath. The upper half of the writing surface also folds up to a stationery compartment below. What a beauty! Very good condition. With a nod to the age and usually fragile nature of papier mache. In remarkable condition really. The surface has a lustrous jet black finish, hardly a sign of crackling or crazing and only the tiniest nip or two. Circa 1900 Clown Doll is a red“2” stamped on the back of the neck. The paint on the face of the papier mache head is original and this German doll has set glass paperweight eyes. She came without a wig and when we removed the black silk turban hat, I could see the top edge has been restored and professionally repainted. The original eyes were reset and the paper teeth will also need to be reattached. The original silk clown outfit is too delicate for me to remove; I can only guarantee that the composition body, including the legs and feet, are in perfect condition. The fingers do have some chipping. In the close-up photographs, you will see that the stitching holding the sleeves to the dress has separated. There are also some fixing spots and a stain on the doll’s right sleeve. I know in the right hands, this rare German Papier Mache Clown Doll can be brought back to displayable condition. Superb antique gilt and hand-painted papier-mache tray Cherries and flowers 19c
Description: Superb antique papier-mache paper-mache tray with a lush gilt background. On which is painted cherries and flowers. The background gilding is actual hand-applied gold gilding that has been varnished before painting(it's applied in squares, the outlines of which are still visible) Has some damage commensurate with the materials, age and use: a scratch at the top(doesn't go through the painted cherries/flowers) a break along the border, some peeling of the black lacquer underside, spots of wear on the surface and along a part of the edge(see pix) All could be repaired fairly easily, but it actually displays quite nicely as is. Unsure of exact age and origin; I originally thought it might be old European papier-mache, but now think it's possibly nineteenth-century, of the Aesthetic era(I have a painted faux-lacquer box ... morefrom that era that has the materials and the same peeling on the underside) Most of my items are vintage or antique and may have normal wear commensurate with age. The lid of the box is hand painted and gilded with a scene of three Chinese figures in a boat with ducks in the foreground and cranes in the background. The ground is painted black while the interior of the box is painted in red. This piece was made between 1880 and 1900. There is wear to the painted and gilt decoration as you can see in the photographs. Otherwise. The condition is excellent. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs. Antique Vtg Hand Mirror Chalk & Paper Papier Mache & Fabric 1920's Art Nouveau
This is for an antique Hand Mirror from the Art Nouveau Period. The face. Handle, and trim around the mirror is paper(papier) mache over a base of chalk and under that I believe, may be a wood frame. She has gold gross-grain bows in her hair and on the bottom of the handle. Her makeup is painted on and is striking and parts of her face are raised giving this slight dimension. The mirror is in great condition with no cracks or chips but does show light wear from age and use. There are a few hairline cracks in the paper mache and a couple of nips of loss showing the white layer of chalk underneath. This piece measures 15" long and 5 3/4" wide. These are SO LOVELY! Measure approximately 2 3/8" in diameter across the top. 3 1/2" in diameter across bottom and 4 1/2" tall, with intricately inlaid mother of pearl in column and swag design as you can see, with hand painted gold accents. There is a small chip on the bottom of one, some small splits/cracks at the base of the cylinders where they sit atop their flared bottoms as shown, which is not unusual for pieces of this age and composition, and in my opinion, this does not detract from their appearance. There are a few tiny pieces of missing mother of pearl around the flared bottom, but due to the intricacy of the design, this is barely noticeable. This is a super example of the mid-19th century work of Jennens& Bettridge of London( fl. 1815- 1864) Master craftsmen in the field of papier mache construction, usage and design, as well as the japanning and decorating processes. This large, scalloped, serving tray measures ~ 30-1/2" in length by 23" wide. It is stamped with a Crown and"JENNENS& BETTRIDGES MAKE LONDON" and numbered 702 and what looks like 8911. Condition is a bit rough- the gilding and decorating has faded but still displays well in the right lighting conditions; the japanning is crazed; and the scalloped rim has two areas of rough degradation that you can see in the photos but don't be misled by the camera flash- both of the rough areas are dark in color.
