Since at least 30.000 B.C. sea shells have been used by mankind as body adornments. Buttons for use to hold clothing together have been used since the 12th or 13th century A.D. It was inevitable that eventually one of mankind’s favorite forms of jewelry, the sea shell, would be used to produce beautiful buttons. And it did happen by the 14th century, and eventually tthe 18th and 19th centuries witnessed the growth of a huge industry– the production of sea shell buttons. Sea shell buttons were enormously popular world wide throughout the eighteen and nineteenth centuries. The center of worldwide sea shell button production in the earliest part of the nineteenth century was London. England. However by the second half of the century, America was producing huge quantities of sea shell buttons as well from fresh water mollusks. On offer is a mother of pearl shell serving dish for caviar or other delicacies. The shell measures 17 cm in diameter. Dating back to c 1890. This dish has a simple engraved decoration to the edge, engraved lines around the centre and a depressed centre to hold caviar or other contents. Mother of pearl is one of the few materials that does not react to caviar. The pattern in the bottom is formed by the shell's abductor muscle and is completely normal. At one time these markings were considered ancient art work but knowledge has advanced since then. This is a large example so that is why we called is a serving dish. Antique Hand Carved Fish Handle Shell MOP Basket Mother of Pearl With Base
Recently acquired from an estate. This is one of many unique auctions. This auction is for a fantastic vintage hand carved shell basket with fish handle. Basket and hand are all carved from one piece of shell. Base is a separate piece attached with a screw. Very detailed, overall size is 4-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 3. Truly one of a kind and in wonderful condition. There is some minor rust around the bolt, sure it could easily be cleaned off and left up to the buyer.
