This is an antique Early American pressed glass cigar ashtray( circa 1855-1910) The tray is made of heavy glass and has a light violet color. Which shows up with different types of lighting. It measures 4 3/4 inches in length, 4 1/8 inches in width, 1 1/8 inches in depth and 1 7/8 inches in height to the top of the match box holder. The match box holder is at the back and in front is a"V" shaped groove so matches could also be held in place. Early American blown glass handled cup or mug. In dainty fragile amethyst glass. Of the type made by Stiegel, late 18th century. This example is likely New England in origin, as it came from an estate with several good early American pieces descended in lineage. Possibly Ohio. Amethyst blown glass in slightly ribbed version. Measuring about 2.25 inches high and about 2.5 inches width to outer handle. Choice underneath pontil mark. Circa late 18th c/early 19th c. About Stiegel: Stiegel's story is the classic rags to riches tale. Which he carried a step beyond a happy ending by going back to rags. Henry Stiegel was born near Cologne and emigrated to Philadelphia in 1750 with his widowed mother and younger brother. After a year or so in Philadelphia. He went to work in Lancaster County for an iron founder, whose daughter, Elizabeth Huber, ... morehe married in 1752. By 1756 Stiegel had become a partner in the ironworks, which was run on a cooperative basis, and he renamed it Elizabeth Furnace. In 1760 he became a subject of Great Britain. By then he was an important community leader and a lay delegate to the Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania. Stiegel. A German immigrant, came to America in 1750, married the daughter of a Lancaster County ironmaster, took over the iron business and diversified into glass production. Elizabeth Furnace was modernized. And a small company town was built around it. Under Stiegel's energetic influence the foundry produced stoves, heating devices, and almost every kind of object that could be made of iron. By the 1760s Stiegel had acquired a second ironworks, Charming Forge, near Womelsdorf, Pa. and a large amount of land at what later became the town of Manheim. His first wife had died, and he married again. In 1763 Stiegel produced. On an experimental basis, his first glassware at Elizabeth Furnace. Lot of 3 antique American glass curtain pulls from the 1860's. All three are about 1" tall in excellent shape. No major flaws noted. They are glass that was worked on an iron rod. These have the iron residue up the entire opening which was caused by rods used from about 1840 to 1870. These handmade glass objects were sold as curtain pulls and beads.
