India where the original Peacock Throne was once housed. Now the Agra Fort is one of the World Heritage Sites of India. The name comes from the shape of a throne. Having the figures of two peacocks standing ... morebehind it, their tails being expanded and the whole so inlaid with sapphires, rubies, emeralds, pearls and other precious stones of appropriate colours as to represent life, created for the Mughal Badshah Shah Jahan of India in the 17th century. Two small late 19th century portraits painted on cobwebs are housed in the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections at Northwestern University. The origin of cobweb painting is difficult to verify. But most academic journals agree that the practice began in a remote valley of the Austrian Tyrolean Alps during the 16th century. Less than 100 known cobweb paintings still exist today, most of which are housed in private collections. These little eccentricities are really interesting to study. said Scott Krafft, acting head of the McCormick Library of Special Collections. They are perfect examples of the occasional triumph of whimsy over practicality. Both oval-shaped paintings. 3 inches wide by 4 inches high, were marketed to the tourist trade by Franz Unterberger(1838-1902) He was an oil painter who was best known for his scenic Italian landscapes. He ran a small shop in Innsbruck and commissioned the portraits from a staff of anonymous artisans, usually peasant craftsmen looking to develop unique items for the tourist trade. The cobwebs usually came from Agelenidae"Funnel-Web" spiders. Whose webs were gathered, layered and wound to form a delicate fabric. The material for the two library portraits, in particular, was then stretched over cardboard to make an oval window mat. To strengthen the canvas, artisans brushed milk diluted in water onto the fabric. Painters would then use a small brush to apply watercolor to the cobwebs. Using custom tools. The most skilled craftsmen were able to create engravings by applying just the right amount of pressure to the canvas. An antique oil on canvas painting of birches with homes and pond in background. Signed lower left T Bailey with excellent bark and leaf decorated plaster frame. The painting, 20" wide by 16" high within frame measuring 26" by 22" has been cleaned and ready for hanging. I believe the frame is original to the painting, the color of the back of the frame and the stretcher are very much the same. William Paskell usually comes to mind as the artist that did many of the T Bailey paintings, but I did not feel comfortable attributing this one to him.the signature looks good but it doesn't have the Paskell feel other than the birches. Antique Enamel Painting and Guilloche Trimmed Opera Glasses
This is a beautiful early pair of cobalt and guilloche trimmed floral enameled opera glasses. They are cobalt with floral medallions and gold and white relief enclosures with guilloche trim at the bases and tops.The lenses are present and in good shape The frames that screw down over the eye pieces are marked L.M. Prince Cincinatti. I don't know if the white caps on the eyepieces and nose piece are original because there is a gap as you can see in the image on each and the eyepieces have tiny fine brass eyeglass-like screws that extend at the gaps.There is a small enamel loss on the white in the upper corner of the floral medallion on one panel which I have imaged and one tiny cobalt pinhead-sized loss on the edge of another panel.
