Antique 22" x 17" Dark Black Wood Picture Frame with Gold Leaf Gilt Border 1890
This is one of the most attractive antique frames that I have on ebay right now. It is a simple frame but I find it to be a really beautiful frame. This frame is from around the 1890s and is mostly a dark black with a bright gold leaf inside border. The rabbet measures about 22" x 17" Each side of the frame measures about 1 3/8" wide. On the side of the frame near one of the corners. There is a good sized chip(measuring about 1" x 1/4" and a crack extending from that chip. However, this damage does not effect the structural integrity of the frame and it not visible when the frame is hanging on the wall as it is on the side of the frame. Because you can't see it, I would still say this frame is still in very good condition. This frame is really gorgeous. The deep dark outside border really highlights the lemon ... moregold inside border. It's a great frame! Shipping is $20 within the continental United States. No international shipping. Interestingly. This portrait is that of Rubens own son, Nicolaas Rubens wearing a coral necklace(circa- 1619) This portrait often goes by two different names. Head of a Boy" as well as, Little Boy with a Coral Necklace" It is said ... morethat during his day, children were advised to wear coral necklaces to protect them from fits and anxiety. Paul Rubens was a proponent of extravagant Baroque-Style. it is only appropriate that his little boy be framed in this very Baroque gold-gilt frame. The 1890-1920 wood frame has exceptional gesso(plaster) ornamentation at the corners and the center of each side.showing layers of intricate scrolls. Flourishes, shells and leaves.exquisitely linked together with a chain-like garland. The gesso is in very nice condition with only minor cracking in one small area and one tiny probable repair nearby. Enlarge photos#6& 7. The original portrait was done in black and red chalk. Heightened with white chalk, which was then enhanced with pen and dark brown ink on brownish paper. This is a print of that famous portrait. I do not know the date of this print, but my guess is prior to 1970 when this frame was purchased by this estate holder. The backside of the frame has a paper that was glued to it that reads: 174 Rubens- Head of a Boy" The kraft paper on the back of this frame looks to be, at least, 1950 and perhaps older. I am not an expert of art. But, I would date this print and frame to the late 19th or perhaps the early 20th century. The frame is lovely with deep well effect. There is one area on the bottom where some of the gold has chipped off, very small and hard to see as someone tried to cover it. This could easily be repaired and covered. The original back has been replaced. The print is lovely of a little bright eyed girl in what appears to be Victorian dress and hat. Overall measures 25 1/2" tall by 19 1/4" wide and 2 1/2" deep. This is an outstanding frame and will compliment a fine piece of art or an antique porcelain plaque of the proper dimensions. It is in very good condition for its age with normal signs of wear. Very minimal losses at the back edges and corners and two nails exposed on the outside edge where the gesso popped off of them. Along the interior of the site edge there is a 2 3/8" long loss to the gesso that can be restored if you like. Antique American Gold Leaf Picture Frame, Gilt Frame, Old Glass, circa 1850
Offered for sale we have an antique gold leaf picture frame. Probably dating from 1840 to 1860. This is a dark gold frame, that I think has darkened a bit more with age. The rabbet size is 24" X 15 7/8" with about 1/8" allowance) the outside of the frame is 26 1/2" X 18 1/2. The moulding is 1 5/8" wide. Besides the glass and old paper back, there's another 1/4" of rabbet depth. This is a great antique frame, but it does have some condition issues. As you can see in the pictures, there are chips on all four corners. Though there are chips, the gesso and gold leaf on the frame is firmly attached an has no inclination to chip any more. The bottom rail has darkened with age, and has dark discoloration in the cove. This you can see in the 6th picture. There are spots on the gold, but especially on the right hand ... moreside, in the cove. The frame was joined with splines, then nailed at a later date. The two upper corners are not tight, as you can see in the pictures. There's a chip on the side of the upper left hand corner that is not pictured, it would be close to the wall, not visible from the front. The side of the frame cants in a bit at the back, towards the wall. The frame has nice. Old wavy glass, a Victorian print, and thin crummy old paper backing. Due to the discoloration on the bottom side, this frame really should be used the way it's hanging now. It would be great for an antique portrait, early sampler, or vertical still life or landscape. It would not look good with the darkened rail being on the side, I think it would look lopsided. Please look carefully at the photos, and ask a question if you have one. Personally, I love these old, hard to find gilt frames, but this one is far from perfect, and if the defects bother you, I'm sure there are many frames in better condition available. Large Early American Gold Leaf Picture Frame, Gilt, Scoop, c. 1840-1850
For sale we have a great antique American gold leaf frame. This frame probably dates from around 1835 to 1860 at the latest. It is a traditional scoop shape. With the outside of the frame higher. It's a large frame, with a rabbet size of 21 1/2" X 27 3/4"with a bit of allowance) the outside dimension is 24 1/2" X 30 3/4" the moulding is 1 7/8" wide. And the rabbet depth is 7/16" Height at the outside of the frame is 1 1/4" This frame is a dark gold leaf, can't really call it a lemon gold. As it is darker. The bottom rail has darkened considerably. And the red bole is showing in spots at the outside edges of the frame. There is no glass or backing, but I'll include hangers and wi re. This frame does have quite a bit of wear; chips at the corners. And on the sides. There is one large chip on the ... morebottom rail, that is pictured i n the 6th photo. There are small black spots from age. And some light scratches on the gold. Please do look carefully at the pictures. This is not a new frame, it isn't perfec t! The frame is joined with large square nails. This frame can easily be cut dow n to a smaller size. I must add that due to the darkened bottom side. This frame is appro priate to be hung as it is now. With the short sides being vertical. It would be great for a landscape. Antique still life, horse painting. Perfect for antique ship painting. Not good for a port rait. As you want the darker side on the bottom. Also, in the last picture you can see the side of the frame. I think that originally it would have been an ochre painted color. But I think that someone has dabbed gold paint on the sides at some po int. It's not on the face of the frame, but only on the sides. Probably can be sanded off. Old frame. Has some dark areas of patina from normal age and use. I cleaned it a little with soap and soft brush but dark areas. the gold gilding. Very ornate pierced detail filigree with five petal flowers set on each of the curved"ruffles" The previous owner told me this was her Mom's and it originally had matching perfume bottles so this was from a set. I only have the frame. Dark burgundy velvety fabric on the back and it can either stand or be hung on a wall as it has two rings for attaching a picture wire. 12-1/4" high. 10" across the outer measurement, and the photograph size would be for a standard 8" by 10" I tried to slip the back board in with some white tissue paper behind the glass to show the frame best but the paper slid up because it was too thick. The frame is gold gilt front and detail is strong almost resembling metal(that strong) Edge of frame is black. Back is impressive rough cut wood panel. Antique 21" x 12.5" Lemon Gold Leaf Gilt Gilded Victorian Frame c. 1890
This is a gorgeous antique Victorian style picture frame from around the 1890s. This frame is in good condition and it has a rabbet of roughly 21" x 12.5" Please contact me if you want me to check the exact dimensions of your art. This is a two piece frame and the outside piece has beautiful bright gold leaf paint. The inside piece is a nice flat mat color and acts as a sort of matting for whatever is in the frame. Antique 19th Century Victorian Wood & Gesso Picture Frame Gilt Gold with Glass
Antique Victorian picture frame made of wood and gesso. It has an ornate design with some gilt. The frame measures 14-5/8" x 17-3/4" It does come with glass that is held in by nails on the back. The glass portion measures approximately 11 inches by almost 14 inches. There is a wire attached to the back for hanging. Overall this frame is pretty good condition with most of that gesso in tact. However it does show signs of age and wear. There are some small cracks in the gesso And some old green paint along the top. The glass does have one scratch. There os a picture. There are some very tiny bubbles in the glass as it is the original glass. Please view the pictures for details. Please let me know if you have any questions. Up for offer we have a large Victorian gold gilt wood triple frame. Measuring approx. 31 3/4" tall. 27 3/4" wide overall. Would hold a painting that measures approx. 20" tall, 16 1/8" across. The outer most frame features acanthus leaves& flowers, the middle frame has vines, and the inner frame has flowers as well. This wonderful old frame is made of wood. Very good condition for its age. Minor wear the gold gilt. Picture 3 shows the worst of the wear to the frame. Amazing work of art all in itself. Fresh from a local estate comes this fancy and stunning 19th century antique victorian large gilt gesso frame it is 30 3/4" by 27 1/8" picture size is 25 by 21 1/2" it is 3" deep done in acorns leafs and flowers and the gilt is crisp this is genuine gold leaf not painted on and it is in over all in great shape for its age a little minor ware to corners and some tiny spots some tight hair lines that you all ways see on these old frames and i mentioned all this more for accuracy there is no missing or lose gesso or bad ware to gilt some one put a new print in this and paper on back some time ago but the frame is at lest 135 years old this frame most likely had a painting in it i have the mate to this one also listed if you what a pair. thanks ... morefor looking and good luck.
