Many of the so-called"rubies" and“sapphires” in Europe's crown jewels are actually spinel. One of history’s most famous gemstones is a spinel known as the Black Prince's“Ruby” a magnificent 170-carat red spinel that currently adorns the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels. Long believed to be a ruby, this gem was once owned by the Arabian Emirs, who were the rulers of Granada(present-day Spain) In the 14th century, Pedro the Cruel, the king of Castile, under the pretext of negotiations, drew into ambush the Emir Abu Said and ruthlessly murdered him and took the gemstone. The gemstone was given to England’s Edward the Black Prince, heir to the British throne, in return for military service putting down an insurrection raised against Pedro the Cruel. King Henry V then wore the gemstone on his battle helmet during the battle of Azincourt in 1415 A.D. Garnet was also worn for protection when traveling, as garnet was believed to warn the wearer of approaching danger, ward off evil spirits, especially spirits of the night, which were referred to as demons and night phantoms. Ancient Christians regarded the blood-red garnet to be symbolic of Christ’s blood sacrifice. According to ancient Hebrew mythology, a giant garnet provided interior lighting for Noah's Ark. The name“apatite” comes from the Greek"apatein" which means"to deceive" to cheat” or"to be misleading" as in the ancient world apatite was often confused with other minerals such as topaz, beryl, sphene, peridot or tourmaline. The Greek name“apatein” also is associated with“Apate” the Greek goddess of deceit, benefactor of politicians. A minor goddess in the Greek pantheon, she was the daughter of Nyx, and one of the spirits inside Pandora's box. Here are two very uncommon. And provided protection against sorcery. It was believed to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. On the flip side, medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Not only did sapphire help to get in touch with astral and psychic realms, but the stone also provided protection for those who took those journeys. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems. Here's a gorgeous. Richly colored natural dark blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. This gemstone was hand crafted into this beautiful faceted oval by a 19th century Russian artisan. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of fire and sparkle. It is considerably lighter in color than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires; more along the lines of the medium blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. Ancient mystical ceremonies in India included the use of the gem as a tool to bring insight and help in the discovery of that which is good, and to make known who or what was the cause of troubles or evil deeds. Medieval alchemists believed tourmaline to be related to the philosopher’s stone, and as such could grant enlightenment, give power over spiritual affairs, reconcile opposites and change base metals to gold. In ancient mythology, tourmaline was found in all colors because it traveled along a rainbow and gathered all the rainbow's colors. Tourmaline occurred in many of the ancient mines that yielded precious gemstones in the ancient world 2,000 years ago, however it was mistaken for(and thus called) emerald or topaz. Here are two exquisitely colored antique pink faceted tourmaline pears from the Southern Urals. Hand faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Pink tourmalines are rather uncommon, probably the most valuable of the ordinary varieties of tourmaline. There is substantially more demand than supply, so thus oftentimes can be quite costly. The color of these specimens have been alternately described as hot pink, neon pink, bubble gum pink, even screaming pink. Let’s just say the color is very in

Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In Medieval Europe smoky quartz talismans were often engraved with the image of a man in armor holding a bow and arrow. The stone supposedly guarded the wearer and the place where it was situated. A crystal ball of smoky quartz was the scrying or divining tool of choice used by magicians and sorcerers. According to some historical references. Smoky quartz was made into“sunglasses” in 12th century Medieval China, so that judges could use the smoky quartz glasses to hide their facial expressions when they interrogated witnesses. Smoky quartz from the Cairngorm Mountains is the national gemstone of Scotland and has been considered a sacred stone there for millennia, a belief dating back to the Druids and Celts. Other ancient cultures have used smoky quartz, and the Cairngorm Mountains were not the only source of smoky quartz in the ancient world. Much of the smoky quartz in the classical Mediterranean World came from the Swiss Alps. Here's a very uncommon semi-precious gemstone from Victorian-era Scotland. Specifically Mount Cairngorm. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, this gemstone is known either as“Smoky” or“Cairngorm” Quartz. Generally“crystal” clear, the smoky tone is caused by the natural radiation emanating from granite stone the quartz is exposed to while buried in the earth. Antique 19thC Grand Tour Pietra Dura Plaques & Bronze Snake Handle Ibrik Pitcher
Up for bids is this Antique 19thC Grand Tour Pietra Dura Plaques& Bronze Snake Handle Ibrik Pitcher. This is a very unusual piece that I haven't been able to find anything else like it in my research. This piece was made during the mid to late 19thC in either France or Italy. The piece is in the form of an Ibrik pitcher which means that this piece was made to be sold as a souvenir of the Grand Tour to wealthy people from the Middle East. The pitcher is made of glass and it is covered stylized scrolling leaves. The pitcher has a figural bronze handle which depicts a snake which has branches coming out from his mouth which are covered in leaves. Over the spout is a hinged cover which has a figural leaf attached to it. This piece comes with its original bronze under tray which is engraved with Persian style decorations on the edge and ... morestylized leaves in the center. The decoration on the tray is hand engraved. The pitcher still has its original ground glass stopper. On each side of the pitcher there is a 1 1/4" x 1" pietra dura plaque. One of the plaques depicts a purple pansy and the other depicts a tulip. The pitcher stands 10 3/4" in height and is 8 3/8 from handle to handle. The tray has a diameter of 5 7/8" and stands 3/4" in height. Both pieces are in great condition with just the finial on the lid is bent but that would be an easy fix and also there is a thin crack to the bronze base that was enforced with some sort of cement to keep the split stable. There is also a slight bend to the setting which the pansy plaque is set in. The plaques are free of chips or cracks.
