Rare European Iron Age bronze sword - Villanovan -750 B.C.
A very rare European Early Iron Age bronze sword. Dating to around 750 B.C. and from the Villanova culture. A very rare. Finely made piece, with narrow, pointed blade, decorated with thick ridges along its length, splaying outwards at the hilt. The hilt is perforated five times, with four of the original bolts still attached, these would have been used to secure a wooden handle in antiquity, slotting into the recessed hilt. The"shadow" of the grip(with C-shaped join) can still be seen, owing to differential oxidation of the bronze. The Villanova culture was a pre-Etruscan civilization centered around the Po valley in modern-day North Italy. They were the first Italic people to gain knowledge of Iron working. And presumably spread this practice throughout the Italian peninsula. This bronze weapon was likely produced as a ceremonial ... morepiece, or may have been an early weapon before the widespread adoption of Iron. Length: 13 5/8 inches. Condition: Exceptional condition. Although Excavated in Europe many years ago it is in a very solid& stable condition. Heavy surface pitting throughout. The blade still has a distinctive edge& the steel/iron is in very good solid bright condition& could still easily be used with devastating efficiency. The grips have long rotted away. The upper hand grip would have likely been bound in leather only with the lower grip in leather bound wood. Early 18th century, dated 1711, Hungarian Partisan head, made for the Guard of the council of the city of Eperies now Presov Slovakia Details: Extremely well made of hand forged steel. With double-edged tapering blade with medial ridge, and thickened point, with a pair of shaped, and pierced with four holes, side-lugs. The lower half of the head engraved on one side with a panorama of the city Eperies, with the Hungarian name of the city EPERIES above. The other side is engraved with a coat-of-arms, possibly of the governor of the city or the commander of the guard) enclosed by laurel and palm, and the date 1711 below. The head has an integral tapering octagonal socket interrupted by two collars and a pair of long straps. This particular ... morepartisan. From the city Eperies- Prešov, is an extremely rare example, and we were not able to find any record of a similar partisan in Hungarian, Slovakian or other world museums and collections, so we suppose, that this is only one example which survived to the present day. Up for auction is a fine height medieval sword of the rare Oakeshott pommel type C/D. It was found in Vorarlberg. Austria many years ago. The sword is in good condition, cleaned and preserved with some minimal restorations. Only the cross guard is not fixed to the blade any more– but this is often the case on ground find swords.
