This is an antique knife box which dates from end of 18 th c to early 19th c. The box is made out of walnut. Later version were made out of mahogany, with a sloping lid and a curved front. It has been transformed into a mailing or paper box. The box has the original finish and shows all the normal signs of age: wood shrinking, closure gaps, missing veneer, as can be seen in the attached photos. Up for sale is a piece of somewhat family history. This portrait is of the Murray family from Norristown. Pa. This was taken in the late 19th century. The only reason I can part with it is that my Great Aunt Florence was related to my family thru marriage. This is her family. Great Aunt Florence is the one standing next to her mother, hanging on her arm. As a child, I remember her as do my siblings and my 14 cousins as, well, lets just say, something else! She died in the early 1960's. My Great Uncle John Grady, her 2nd husband and my blood relative, died in 1974, when I was 16 years old. I have had this portrait since I was 16 and now I am 55. It is time for Great Aunt Florence and her family to move on as I am downsizing. The frame is oak and original. The glass was broken when i received this portrait. Within the outer portion of the scene are magnificent cartouches done in luster. Gilt surrounds the scene. The border are in a light blue and also done in luster. The tray is fabulous and in perfect condition. The handles are done in gilt. The artist Lucot is one of the more famous artists in Sevres. It is in great condition with no damage whatsoever. It is beautifully etched and painted and features the traditional red and black lacquer. The bottom of the piece is also decorated as are the bottoms of the two nesting bowls. This is a really nice piece and small enough to be a perfect point of interest to any collector's home. This double leaf. Exquisitely painted silk hand fan by French artist Gabrielle Zaborowska lovingly depicts a man offering a basket of flowers to a woman. Their faces are delicately portrayed with beautiful expressions of joy. The artist. Gabrielle Zaborowska, according to fan collector Anna Ceccholi on Collector's Weekly website, was born in Paris in 1852 and the date of her death is unknown. Zaborowska was her married name. She previously went by her maiden name.G. Eylé, which was the name she signed when working for Duvelleroy and other famous fan-making maisons in Paris. Many of Zaborowska’s fans had romantic. Bucolic themes or were pastiches of eras such as Louis XV that reflected the fashion and taste of the time. She painted during the 1880's and into the 20th century. Each of the tiny sequins is meticulously sewn in place. Although the type of metal of some of the sequins is uncertain. Possibly brass, copper or alloy, the center borders of the crossed torches appear to be pressed gold. Since the metal is untarnished and still glistens like new. I believe it is gold or gold alloy. Each of those sequins is textured to resemble the painted roses and measures 1/16th of an inch. Some of the painted roses have a star sequin sewn on to it to give it extra definition. One can only imagine how the sequins would flash is the candlelight as it was moved about in some lovely woman's delicate hand. The sticks are bone. Possibly bovine and the unique carvings and punch work on each of the sticks creates a rhythmic pattern unlike the usual repetitive design of machine cut sticks. It is truly a beautiful fan with a romantic theme. Perhaps it was given as a proposal of marriage. Or a gesture of love. This is one fan that will surely add to the grace and value of any collection.
