VTG Antique 1856 Hand-Colored Map South America from A Companion Atlas
1856 Map of South America Hand-colored 11 x 13 3/8 inches Page from A Compilation Atlas for Cornell's High School Geography published in New York by D. Appleton& Co. In excellent condition. No tears. Brown strip down spine side and staple marks where it was removed from the atlas. Whitish spot over Guianna(upper middle of map) is a reflection where there is a hole in the plastic wrap. Has another hole in plastic wrap on lower right corner. Neither place has caused any discoloration or tears to map. 1727 Very Scarce Durant Map of Arica, Chile
1727 Le Roux Durant Map- Arica"Nouveau Voyage Autour du Monde" was published in 1727 by Flahault in Paris and was an account of the adventures of J.B. Le Gentil de la Barbinais between 1714 and 1717. The maps for the account were engraved by Le Roux Durant. Of whom little or nothing is known. He is not mentioned in Tooley's"Dictionary of Mapmakers" His maps are quite decorative and often involve unusual combinations of areas. This map of the port of Arica in northern Chile. On the edge of the Atacama Desert, comes from"Nouveau Voyage Autour du Monde" and shows the extensive harbour and reefs. The appearance of five ships provide one of the decorative elements while the map title is done in a gorgeous cartouche. The decorative elements are enhanced by a compass rose. The map presents a fascinating snapshot of European knowledge of Peru and environs in the last quarter of the 18th century. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Lima to La Paz in what is now Bolivia as seen below measures just 10 cm actual size. Scotland. It is dated September 16, 1814. The map was engraved by J. Moffat. It is printed on a heavy stock paper and has a horizontal fold line in the middle. I don't think it was ever bound but was probably part of a portfolio. The map is also marked No. 69 on the lower right corner. The page size is approximately 21" x 25" It is interesting to note that the northeastern portion refers to the Atlantic or Western Ocean; the southeastern portion is called the South Atlantic Ocean and the western ocean is called the Grand Southern Ocean. Considering its age, the map is in very good shape with a tear ... moreon the upper left corner, not affecting the map directly and numerous little tears and chips in the margin, also not affecting the map. Color references are used for defining boundaries. Our last picture is of the reverse side; it shows a tape along that middle fold line as well as ghosting of the outlines of the borders.
