VINTAGE BRAZILIAN BUTTERFLY WOODEN ART DECO TRAY CARLOS ZIPPERER RIO DE JANEIRO
Up for bids is an antique vintage Art Deco tray made in the 1920s-30s timeframe in Brazil. The tray features a very popular art form of the time that involves crafting scenes using butterfly wings. This one depicts water. Sand and palm trees with houses and a mountain range(Sugarloaf? in the background. There is a large cross, possibly the image of the statue"Christ the Redeemer" on the summit. The wings are very iridescent and difficult to capture in a photo. The composition is unique and lovely. The label on the back of the tray indicates it was crafted by Carlos Zipperer. Whose work is very collectible. It measures 16 3/4 inches across and 9 1/4 inches tall. The handles are rounded and raised from the tray. The single piece of wood on the back of the tray has an age crack as pictured but does not detract from its beauty or integrity. ... moreThis is a rather common result of wood expansion on an old piece. Theodor Preising was one of the most important photographers and producer of real photo postcards in Brazil. He settled in Argentina in 1920 but moved to Brazil in 1923 and opened a stand at the Great Hotel of Guarujá. State of São Paulo to sell photographic cameras and postcards. In 1924, he opened a laboratory in São Paulo and started producing real photo postcards with views of Brazilian cities. He was the first one to introduce small format cameras for photographs used on postcards. Preising produced postcards from 1924 to the beginning of the Second World War. When foreigners pertaining to Axle countries were forbidden to take photographs of the exterior of Brazilian ... morecities.
