It includes the modern day nations of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands. Ecuador, Venezuela, and Columbia are united under the ephemeral Grand Columbia. Bolivia's claims to the Atacama Desert and Peru's claims to the Tarapaca region- both of which are today part of Chile, are shown. Chili extends southward only to the border of Patagonia. Guyana is shown with British, French and Dutch divisions. The map also covers the modern day country of Uruguay and part of the Rio Grande Do Sul region in Brazil. This map was included in many editions of Blaeu atlases published subsequently by Blaeu's son and successor(1599-1673) and this example is a fine early impression with no text on verso. Blaeu based the cartography in part on a 1631 chart by by Dutch East India Company principal cartographer(1580-1632) as well as his own West Indische Paskaert of 1630 and added a rich array of decorative elements making it one ... moreof the most sought-after 17th century maps of the region. The map presents three fine compass roses with radiating rhumb lines. Five ships and three fine cartouches including a rather bizarre menagerie in the title cartouche. Wonderfully decorative and historically important, this well preserved example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the title cartouche presented by twin putti with a host of new world critters- note hanging turtle"pendant. Map names both Florida and Virginia. And Gerritsz is believed to have consulted some Spanish sources for the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Printed in the mid-19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. With original outline hand color. A lovely decorative map with fine vignette views and elaborate engraved border. In Good+ condition. Light minor age wear, blank margins trimmed close to engraved border, small edge splits mended on back with archival tape, couple tiny edge nicks, at far left edge in blank margin a small stain as seen, overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very ... moreconservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing.
