Overall, a very nice map that would frame up nicely. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 10 by 16 inches(25x41cm) on a page measuring 12 1/2 by 17 3/4" 32x44cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall light tonal ageing and some darkening around the edges of the margin. Otherwise it is very clean with strong color on a heavy page, blank on the reverse. It is basically as seen in the pics, see the pic for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map. Johnson purchased the engraved steel plates created by G.W. Colton and the copyrights for his maps. This map is from the Johnson and Browning Atlas of 1861, In his attempt to create an attractive. High-quality product to compete with the mapmakers of Europe, Johnson added ornate borders to the plates. 1784 Bayly Map- South America John Bayly was an engraver who worked in London. England in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Much of his output was single cartographic items of larger size and he did little work for the atlas publishers of the day. However his one venture into mass map publishing was for John Harrison who published William Martyn's'The Geographical Magazine or a New, Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography' in 1784. This map of South America comes from the Geographical Magazine. It has very clear. Simple engraving and the oval title ignores the customary vignette, common to so many maps of the time. Like his contemporary, John Cary, Bayly brings cartography into the more recognizable, modern approach. Bonne is perhaps best known today for his early maps of the nascent United States which was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War when this map was published- indeed Bonne's maps of the period are among the first to name the"Ḗtats-Unis" as such. The map was compiled for the atlas volume Bonne produced to accompany the profoundly influential work Histoire philosophique et politique.
