Antique maps of Central and South America from an atlas published in the late 19th Century. One side has South America(Guatemala. San Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica) and the other side has Central America, This is an original page from 1894, not a reprint or copy. Because the page is double-sided, only one side can be displayed at once. However, there are no copyright restrictions on the maps so one of the sides could be copied if you'd like to display both. Condition: Good. Aging around the margins, which just adds to the appeal of the old map. The paper is fairly fragile, so map page will need to be protected from less than careful handling. Note: the page was just a bit too big for the scanner, so part of the margin area is not shown. Some edge wear and small tears that are well clear of the map and would be covered with ... morea frame. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' A 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. This engraving comes from an early octavo 1748 edition of'Histoire. The engraving shows the Temple of the Sun at Cuzco in Peru. Cuzco was the major Inca centre at the time of the Spanish invasion. The people drawn outset the temple resemble neither Incas nor 16th century Spaniards! With image measuring 49cm x 38.5cm Central fold. Lightly browned to margins and in places. The reverse is uniformly browned, and there is scattered foxing. There are a few little nicks to the edges, little tear to the bottom edge, and the bottom corner tips have tiny chip. 1753 map of Callao Peru near Lima SPANISH TREASURE GALLEON PORT since 1500's
This large map measures 21.5cm x 37.5cm(9 1/2" x 15" and shows the Port of Callao in Peru and the cartographer was Thomas Jefferys with a penciled date of"1753" on back. Made from cotton rags and sometimes called"laid or lined" paper. The Port of Callao is just west of Lima on the coast and was discovered by Pizarro in 1537 and became Spain's main Port in the New World. Much of the silver and gold being mined by the Spanish in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina was exported from this port to Panama where it then went to Cuba and finally back to Spain. Because of its importance to Spain, Sir Francis Drake pillaged the town in 1578 just to harass Spain. Condition: there is a 1 1/8" border tear on bottom right side in which 1/4" reaches inside print area(repaired with neutral PH archival tape) Vertical and ... moreone horizontal fold line; no foxing spots with nice bright ink remaining. trimmed to within 1/16" on right bottom border with 1/2" 3/4" on remaining borders. Some light ink transfer on front from opposing pages from the atlas this was removed from. Overall in good condition. 1679 Duval Map of Magellanica, South America
1679 Du Val Map- Terra Magellanica Pierre Du Val was a nephew and pupil of the greatest of all French cartographers. Nicolas Sanson, and went on to become the Royal Geographer. He published many atlases in all sizes but one of his great achievements was the two volume'Geographie Universelle' first published in 1660, these charming little maps are very distinctive. This very nice map of the extreme southern part of south America comes from a 1679 edition of that atlas. The area shown is present day Argentina and Chile but it was then known as Magellan's Land after the explorer. His Straits are shown prominently at the bottom of the map. There is a nice. Good(G) Will probably have significant wear or damage. Although is still intact. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy. The old saying in bookselling is"good ain't good. 1741 Lenglet Du Fresnoy Map- Amerique Meridionale Nicolas Lenglet Du Fresnoy was a French intellectual. Initially known for literary criticism but later becoming expert in both history and geography. Among his many books was" Methode pour etudier la geographie, ou l'on donne une description exacte de l'univers" first published in 1718 but with other editions up to his death in 1755. This map comes from an edition of 1741 and the engraver is not known. This map of South America shows a very different political geography to today with the colonial powers. Particularly Spain, holding sway.
