This map covers Gran Colombia or Great Colombia, which included territories of modern day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, and part of northern Brazil, Peru and Guyana. Envisioning an independent New World nation comprising all of the territories under the Spanish and Portuguese colonial rule, the Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda suggested a consolidated South American empire named after Christopher Columbus. The idea took hold and in 1819 the‘Viceroyalty of New Granada’ comprising of modern day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela) among the first South American regions to liberate ... morethemselves from Spain, was renamed‘Gran Colombia’ The war against Spain finally ended in the mid-1820s when the pro-Spanish loyalists were decisively crushed. The congress of Cucuta adopted a constitution for the new republic in 1821. The vision of Gran Columbia, unfortunately, proved untenable and Venezuela and Ecuador became independent states 1829 and 1830, respectively. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. This is an original map from an 1895 Rand McNally Atlas. This map is in very good to excellent condition. This map is highly detailed and the colors are very good. This is a two page map with an overlap of almost two inches. With that much overlap. It is fairly easy to mount this map. Fine original antique engraving. Made approximately 220 years ago. Printed in 18th century England. On quality hand-made rag paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Created to illustrate a voyage of exploration and discovery across the world to the Southern Ocean and Pacific region. In the 18th century. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were often sold individually and as part of illustrated ... moretravel accounts. All of which are now scarce and valuable today. They are much sought after as a visual record of a bygone era and are great conversational items once framed for display. When you stop to consider their age and the fact they are original engraved works of art. It's amazing how affordable they actually are. What is also very interesting is that many of these views were continually re-engraved over time. So that while titles may be identical, in fact the engraved plate may be an entirely different one. This means there are likely numerous variants for each image, something which will reveal itself with close comparision between the prints. In Good+ or better condition. Bordered map area is about 20" x 13.25" and the map has sufficient margins for matting or framing. Too big for my scanner so scanned in two passes. Resulting scans were then electronically merged. There is NO break in the center of the map. There is a fold. No break in the map; printed on a single sheet with a fold in the center. Scanned in two passes on a tabloid sized scanner and the two scans combined electronically. This color map of South America was taken from a Cram's atlas published in Chicago by George Cram. The commercial relationship between de l'Isle and Louis Renard in Amsterdam was negotiated in 1706, and probably ... moredid not warrant the inscription found here"Et se trouve a Amsterdam chez Louis Renard Libraire prez de la Bourse, before 1707. So one can date this map 1707 with some confidence. The relationship between de l'Isle and Renard was strained from the beginning and was never a success, but it was not terminated formally until 1718. Original, steel-engraved map of Bolivia, Peru and part of Brazil- South America VI, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come.
