CENTRAL AMERICA AND PART OF BRAZIL FULL COLOR MAPS. These maps are from a very rare 1892 atlas entitled"Cram's Unrivaled Atlas of the World, Indexed" published by S. L. Bradley, 415 Dearborn Street, Chicago. This is a Grand New Census and World's Fair Edition. Maps are full color- very attractive and interesting! This map has 4 full pages; the center 2 pages are South America(scale 1 inch equals about 385 miles) On the flip side of one page is Central America(no scale given) and on the flip side of the other page is part of Brazil. Pages are large, being either 14 1/2" x 10 3/4" or 11 5/8 x 14 1/2" with viewing area being approximately 12” x 9” ... morea little more or a little less) on most of the maps. Each map has at least one edge that is not 100% razor straight where it was taken out of the binding mounted in the atlas. The larger pages have tiny perforations(see picture) along the binding edge where it was bound with cord. All pages are slightly yellowed from age but map colors are bright and clear. Maps may have small dog-eared corners or tiny pieces of corners missing. See individual pictures. These pages have a few light smudges in the margins. Every map has an atlas page number in one margin. What appears to be a lighter area on the map is from camera flash. It includes the modern day nations of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands. Ecuador, Venezuela, and Columbia are united under the ephemeral Grand Columbia. Bolivia's claims to the Atacama Desert and Peru's claims to the Tarapaca region- both of which are today part of Chile, are shown. Chili extends southward only to the border of Patagonia. Much of South America was, at this time, embroiled in or about to become embroiled in, severe civil strife. The new nations, freed from Spanish dominance though various wars of liberation in the previous decades, were struggling with their newfound independence in an attempt create stable and prosperous governments. Most would dissolve into civil war between 1858 and 1864. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Peru's claim to the Tarapaca region. Which is today part of Chile, is shown here. Towns, rivers, mountains, railroads, canals, marshes, forests, and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and territorial boundaries are outlined in color. In 1836, shortly after this map was prepared, the Peru-Bolivian Confederation came into existence. The Confederation proved ephemeral, collapsing in 1839 following the War of the Confederation, a conflict between Chile, Peruvian rebels, ... moreand Argentina against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. 1727 Le Roux Durant Map- Untitled"Nouveau Voyage Autour du Monde" was published in 1727 by Flahault in Paris and was an account of the adventures of J.B. Le Gentil de la Barbinais between 1714 and 1717. The maps for the account were engraved by Le Roux Durant. Of whom little or nothing is known. He is not mentioned in Tooley's"Dictionary of Mapmakers" His maps are quite decorative and often involve unusual combinations of areas. This map of the port of Conception in southern Chile comes from"Nouveau Voyage Autour du Monde" and shows the extensive harbour and depths. The anchorage of four ships provide one of the decorative elements while the whole map is done on a draping. The decorative elements are enhanced by an ornate distance scale. Handsome vertical map showing all of South America and portions of"New Spain" Central America) in color. Plus surrounding waters and islands. Towns, rivers, mountains, territorial nomenclature. Vast areas are largely uncharted, but a surprising amount of the interior is indicated in some detail. From Curacao in the north to Diego Ramirez at the extreme southern tip. CONDITION: Very Good. Mild age yellowing. Darker at the extreme edges. Inked number in the bottom right margin. Tiny split at the left fold in the margin. paper and folds are otherwise sturdy. A few light bends(not really creases) Overall nicely preserved and would display well- there is ample margin for framing. We use accepted bookseller's grading standards: Fine. Printed on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Map is set within a decorative engraved border. In Very Good or better condition. Sheet is lightly and evenly age-toned, may exhibit light/moderate foxing or age-spotting as seen in scan[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains pleasing.
