There are nice insets of the area around Rio de Janeiro, the south coast of Brazil and Uruguay; and a long inset of chile Size: The map image area from neat line to neat line measures approximately 14 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches(37x44cm) on a 17 1/2 by 22" 44x56cm) page with a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Good condition for its age with vibrant color on a bright sheet. There are a couple of very light damp stains on the left edge and a slight half inch split at the end of the centerfold. Otherwise it is very clean with a strong impression that would frame up well. The rarity and great importance of the map are based upon the fact that the Jesuit in the 18 th century–until their expulsion in 1767- controlled in their missions most the area herein shown. Jansson Hondius Peru Antique Map, Perú mapa in excellent condition
We are selling an original Johannes Jansson Peru Map circa 1650-1665 printed in Amsterdam- this map is about 350 years old and is not a copy. This is a large decorative antique map with nice decorative cartouche. Compass rose(north is to the left) a whole fleet of ships, and three sea monsters- it contains all the interesting aspects of early maps. The plate for this map was originally developed by Hondius, and later Jansson modified and added his name to the bottom. The overall condition is very good to excellent. There are no worm holes. The center fold is in perfect condition, the map impression is strong and the paper is in excellent condition with only slight browning over the ages. This map has been in our family and framed we believe for at least 100 years(it was hanging in an old family farm house in the 1930s) so we are certain the ... morecolor is at least old if not original. The coloring is quite muted and nicely done without the modern bright colors. The map is approximately 21 3/4 inches by 17 1/4 inches(55 cm X 44 cm) and the map impression is 19 1/4 inches by 15 inches(49 cm X 38 cm) The map is framed in a fine cherry one inch frame. Peru, Brazil and British Guyana. The map covers from Panama to Bolivia and east as far as British Guyana. Envisioning an independent New World nation comprising all of the territories under the Spanish and Portuguese colonial rule, the Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda suggested a consolidated South American empire named after Christopher Columbus. The idea took hold and in 1819 the territories known as the‘Viceroyalty of New Granada’ comprising of modern day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela) became the first South American region to liberate itself from Spain. The region was renamed‘Gran Colombia’ The war against Spain ended ... morein the mid-1820s when the pro-Spanish loyalists were decisively crushed. The congress of Cucuta adopted a constitution for the new republic in 1821. The vision of Gran Columbia, unfortunately, proved untenable and both Venezuela and Ecuador split off to became independent states 1829 and 1830, respectively. Throughout, the map identifies various cities, towns, rivers, mountain passes and an assortment of additional topographical details. Original, steel-engraved map of Patagonia, with inset maps of the Isle of Georgia, and the South Shetlands and Orkneys, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, these maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for ... moredecades to come. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each ... moremap. The maps are lithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive, Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. 1896 Cram's Railway Map of South America. Genuine
This is a large 1896 Map of South America. It measures 12 X 17 1/2 inches. This map is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. Map was taken from the Cram's Railway Atlas which is near impossible to find and very expensive when found. Truly a rare map of museum quality to be held for investment or show. While not considered a true Railroad map, railroads are not named) it is very detailed as can be seen in the lower scan. We take special care in shipping these maps as there are no replacements. Map will come rolled in kraft paper inside one of our special pvc mailing tubes. Which the post office cannot crush. Map may show minor handling. See top scan for condition. Published: Amsterdam. 1638. Size: 16.1 x 20.9 inches. 41.0 x 53.2 cm. A map of South America's extremity with the Strait of Magellan and Le Maire Strait. The coastlines are depicted as very mountainous. While the interior is completely without detail. Richly arrayed with rhumb lines, three compass roses, a fleet of ships, and the coat of arms and dedication to Constantijn Huygens. Huygens served successive Princes of Orange: he was first councilor and reekenmeester to the Stadholder-King William III until his death in The Hague in 1687. Three strapwork cartouches with title. Key and scale featuring a family group of natives. As Willem Blaeu died in 1638 most of his maps are actually published by his son Joan. This maps carries his(engraved) signature and was actually published in volume II of a French edition of his"Le Theatre du ... moreMonde ou Nouvel Atlas" Dated 1638, therefore published the last year of his life. From early on Willem Jansz. Blaeu aimed of publishing an atlas to compete with the Hondius-Jansson Atlas. By 1630. He had published at least 17 folio size maps. Blaeu was able to realize his plan soon after he had acquired the copper plates of the atlas maps by Jodocus Hondius. The"Appendix followed in 1630. In 1635 he finally realized a"international edition" of a world atlas. The"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" This example is from a very rare 1638 French text edition. Which has the same copperplates as the 1635 edition, however the text on the verso was reset in two text columns. This edition is the last version the great master printed under his patronage. Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of northeast South America(II) by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall(title-page of the atlas is shown below. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps.
