ARGENTINE REPUBLIC, PARAGUAy AND URUGUAY by Johnson and Ward. is from the 1862 Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas. It was drawn and engraved under the supervision of J H Colton and A J Johnson. This rare and beautiful map features Brazil. Argentine Republic, Paraguay and Uruguay in 1862. Johnson maps are famous for their exquisite hand colored topographical detail. Notice the insets. One is an etching of the Harbor of Rio De Janeiro showing a sailing vessel and coast line. One inset is a detail close up of Rio De Jaeiro and one of Pernambuco. Mountains. It covers the Northern South American Coast and shows a large number of Caribbean Islands. It is from the only English Edition of the“Mercator’s Atlas” published in 1636. It has original color and measures almost 22 inches(55 cm) by almost 19 inches(almost 48 cm) CONDITION: In the main, this maps is in fine condition. 1723 Moll Map- Chili. Magellans-Land and Terra del Fuego Herman Moll was probably the greatest self-promoter of all eighteenth century cartographers. A Dutch/German emigre to London in the late 1600's. He managed to find influential friends and backers and he enjoyed success right up to his death in 1732. His atlases included'Thesaurus Geographicus' A System of Geography' Atlas Minor' Atlas Manuale' The Compleat Geographer' and'The World Described' many of which used the same copperplate maps. He also contributed maps to Oldmixon's'British Empire in N. America' This attractive map of eastern North America comes from a scarce 1723 edition of'The Compleat Geographer' and is a fine example of Moll's distinctive engraving style. An original antique map entitled"South America" drawn and engraved by J. Bartholomew(see below) and published in A. C. Black's General Atlas printed circa 1870. The original owner has dated the map on the back as 1859 but I'm not sure that chromolithographic printing used here was employed earlier than 1870. Overall size 24 x 17.5 inches. Very good condition. A Bartholomew device. By the late 19th century. Edinburgh was established as the centre of Scotland's flourishing publishing industry. The family firm John Bartholomew& Son Ltd can take some credit for this. The business started small. But it was soon to become one of finest publishers of maps and atlases in the world. On this page: Duncan Street. of building The Bartholomew mapmaking firm was located in several parts of Edinburgh over the years. In 1859 it ... morewas an engraving and lithographic establishment based on North Bridge. The firm moved to Brown Square in 1869. And then to Chambers Street in 1876. By 1889 the company was also a printing firm, and moved to a bigger building on Park Road. In 1911 the Bartholomews moved their offices to even larger premises on Duncan Street. The firm became a private limited company– John Bartholomew and Son Ltd– in 1919. It remained a family business. Passing from son to son, until 1980 when Reader's Digest bought out the firm. The News International Corporation bought the company in 1985 and the family's formal association with the business ended in 1987. Since 1989 the business has been owned by HarperCollins Publishers. George Bartholomew(1784-1871) was the first of the Bartholomew engravers. At the age of 13 he started an apprenticeship with Daniel Lizars in Edinburgh. Bartholomew then worked for Lizars as a general engraver. 1723 Moll Map- The Great Province of Rio De La Plata Herman Moll was probably the greatest self-promoter of all eighteenth century cartographers. A Dutch/German emigre to London in the late 1600's. He managed to find influential friends and backers and he enjoyed success right up to his death in 1732. His atlases included'Thesaurus Geographicus' A System of Geography' Atlas Minor' Atlas Manuale' The Compleat Geographer' and'The World Described' many of which used the same copperplate maps. He also contributed maps to Oldmixon's'British Empire in N. America' This attractive map of the lands around Rio de la Plata comes from a scarce 1723 edition of'The Compleat Geographer' and is a fine example of Moll's distinctive engraving style. This is a scarce publication and the maps are almost ... moreidentical to the 1701 edition of'Atlas Manuale' At that time the region was under Spanish colonial control and the modern country of Argentina did not exist. Tucuman. Uraguay, Charcas, Rio de la Plata are shown as separate provinces and much of present day southern Brazil is also part of this administrative region. The map measures 6.5" by 7" on a larger sheet of text. Has outline hand colouring, and is in very good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 290 years old.
