It is from a rare edition of Charles Desilver's New Universal Atlas. Published by Desliver in Philadelphia in 1857. The map has a copyright date by Desliver of 1856 in small print in the bottom margin. Desilver's name and address 251 Market St. Philladelphia appears under the title area. The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some minor changes particularly ... morein the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Size: The map image measures approximately 10 by 12 inches on a 13 3/4 by 17" page. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edges and some minor spots mainly in the margin, otherwise it is very clean with a nice anttique quality that would frame up nicely. Rare and Attractive Antique Keith Johnston's Map of Scotland c1880, Segmented
This is an interesting. Antique folding travelling map of Scotland dating from around 1880. It's an excert from Keith's Johnston's Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. It has an inset of the Shetland islands and the Fair islands in the top corners. The New Travelling Map of Scotland" was published by William Blackwood and Sons of Edinburgh and London. When opened the map measures approx 90.5 cm x 61.5 cm. There is a little plan of Edinburgh. The map is mounted on linen and folds beautifully. There is a comprehensive index which contains references to"upwards of 9250 places" There is also an advertisement for Keith Johnston's Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. The outer spine is in rather poor condition but the map covers are hanging on. The index part is loose- the last page of the index is still attached. 1782 Decorative Kitchin Map of Scotland
1782 Kitchin Map- Scotland Thomas Kitchin is a name frequently encountered on maps from the mid to late 1700's. Prodigious as his output was. It did not stop him from bankruptcy, a fate shared by many of his fellow cartographers. Kitchin issued atlases on his own as well as in collaboration with Thomas Jefferys and Emanuel Bowen. He also worked for many other others, including Salmon, for whom he provided the maps for some editions of his'Gazetter' This map is from a 1782 edition of Salmon's'Gazetter' published in Edinburgh. This map of Scotland has the usual excellent clarity of engraving from Kitchin. It notes the counties. And major cities, and the topography is nicely illustrated. There is an inset map of the Shetland Islands, and a highly decorative title cartouche with an eagle. The map measures 7" by 7.5" ... morewith two folds(as issued) And is in only poor to fair condition- there is a 3" tear on the right side of the map which has been repaired on the reverse, and there are several small separations along the folds some of which have been reinforced. The map has a bit of creasing and a two inch tear coming in from the top as well as some routes/mileage written in pencil on it's back but overall is not too bad condition for it's age. Thompson moved away from the decorative cartouches and colorful maps of his predecessors and chose to detail his maps with precision and definition. Thompson published“New General Atlas” in 1817 in partnership with James Kirkwood, the leading engraver in Edinburgh. Kirkwood’s printmaking family produced most of the banknotes of Scotland, maps, globes and atlases and was well acknowledged for their great skill. Enormous 1856 Map of Scotland on Two Sheets!
Up for auction is a very large. Hand-colored, two sheet map of Scotland from 1856! The IMAGE on each sheet measures approximately 20"x 24" with ample borders for matting and framing. Excellent condition with only a few scattered marks here and there and no foxing! There is a vertical fold line present down the center of each sheet, as issued. The map has a slight roll to it, but it will flatten out with framing. The edges of the map are gilt, which probably prevented any deterioration to the piece while it was in the atlas. A beautiful hand coloured map showing the"middle part of Galloway which lyeth betweene the rivers of Dee and Cree" This is an original John Blaeu map. Dating from 1654. The map is in a fragile condition, with a small fragment missing to the far left. However, no detail is lost. The map has been restored at some point. It is in good condition considering it is more than 450 years old. Looks fantastic in a frame. The map includes the town of Kirkcudbright but it predates places like Newton Stewart and Gatehouse of Fleet. Though many of the castles that line that coast are marked, along with the hills and lochs. Minnigaff can be found and Wigtown is shown. This is a wonderful piece of history that will delight anyone with an interest in Galloway in general. And the Stewartry in particular. I used to live in this area, but have now ... moremoved away, hence the sale.
