Plan of Philadelphia" Pennsylvania lovely handcolored map by S. Augustus Mitchell. Dated 1860 Sheet measures 12.5" x 15" Samuel Augustus ... moreMitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps, many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior. Entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. The younger Mitchell became as prominent as his father and published atlases well into the late 1880s. Fine condition on great paper. Housed in mylar. See photo.

1856 Colton Map of Switzerland WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Switzerland. Description: A beautiful 1855 first edition example ... moreof Colton's map of Switzerland. Like most of Colton's Europe maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of the World produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. The map covers the entirety of Switzerland divided into its constituent Cantons from Vaud to Grisons. Parts of adjacent France, Germany, and Italy are also shown. After the creation of a federal constitution in 1848, Switzerland underwent a rapid social and economic development. The cantonal currencies were replaced by a single currency(the Swiss Frank) and many of the cantons subsequently established representative governments and instituted freedom of the press and trade. This map also identifies various cities, towns, villages, railroads, canals, rivers, rapids, mountain passes, and an assortment of additional topographical details. It also identifies battlefields, including the battles of 1798 in the canton of Schwyz during the French Revolutionary Wars. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define canton boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. Issued as page no. 15 in volume 2 of Colton's 1856 Atlas of the World. Size: Printed area measures 14 inches high by 17 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Blank on verso. Even overall toning. See photo.

Central America Hawaii Islands Meyer c.1855 antique map very detailed old color MITTELAMERICA MIT DEN SPECIALKARTEN UBER(Central America- Hawaii- Pacific ... moreIsland insets) Issued c.1850-60. Germany, for Meyer. Fine original antique engraved map. Made approximately 150 years ago. Printed in the mid-19th century in Germany, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. With original hand color. In near VG or better condition[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting image. Any minor defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. Sheet measures c. 12" W x 10" H. Engraved area measures c. 9 3/4" W x 7 1/4" H. 13061] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. 1861 Johnson Map of Nebraska. Dakota, Colorado and Kansas WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Johnson's Nebraska. Dakota, ... moreColorado, Kansas. Description: From the 1861 Johnson and Browning edition of the Johnson's Atlas. This is one of the rarest and most desirable states of the Johnson’s Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas map. In this example Nebraska is drawn with a long panhandle extending from Iowa all the way to Fremont’s Peak. To the north, Dakota is a massive and newly partitioned territory extending from Minnesota to the Rocky Mountains and from Nebraska to the border with British Columbia. Shows an embryonic Colorado with a few towns and North Park, Middle Park and South Park noted. This map also notes the three routes proposed for the Pacific Railroad: the Governor Stevens route through Dakota, the Lieutenant Beswith route through Nebraska, and the Captain Gunnison route through Colorado and Kansas. The map references various American Indian Nations throughout as well as countless geographical features including mountains, lakes, passes, rivers, rapids, etc. Features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. Published by A. J. Johnson and Browning as plate number 55 in the 1861 edition of Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas. This is the last edition of the Johnson Atlas to bear the'Johnson and Browning' imprint. Subsequent editions reflect Ward's 1862 acquisition Ross C. Browning's shares in the firm. 1603 Ortelius Map SCOTLAND Scotiae Tabula "Sideways" Orientation FINE EXAMPLE!
Scotiae Tabula 47 cm x 35 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1573, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Scotland(Van der Krogt 5800:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Certainly one of the most sought-after printed maps of Scotland of all time. This western oriented"sideways" map is a true masterpiece of the engraver's art, here enhanced by superb hand colour work of the very highest order. Ortelius based the cartography largely on Mercator's 1564 eight-sheet wall map of the British Isles. We begin our survey of the map with the magnificent strapwork title cartouche. Enhanced by a spouting sea monster at left: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Edinburgh to Glasgow(west. But"up" in the map's orientation) as seen below measures just 5 cm actual size. Notations inform that Loch Ness never freezes and Loch Lomond is prone to"obnoxious tempests" and its fish have no bones: Note elegant calligraphy. Legend in Ireland naming the numbered islands within Loch Lomond: A handsome ship salis to the west. But"above" of the"Iles of Orknay" note pictorial Highland topography: STEIPEREIDUR. A most gentle and tame kind of whale, which for the defence of fishermen fights against other kinds of whales. It is forbidden by Proclamation that any man should kill or hurt this kind of Whale. It has a length of at least 100 cubits. The Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself and we offer representative excerpts below derived from the 1606 English edition published in London: The inhabitants having abundance of Barley whereof they make a
