Regnum Scotiae 57.5 cm x 48 cm copperplate engraving. 60 cm x 51.5 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Nuremberg, circa 1720 We are pleased to offer this handsome original map of Scotland by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann(1663-1724) Founder of the leading German map publishing firm of the 18th century. Homann was not really a true cartographer and his maps were typically close copies of earlier maps. Usually French, which he reworked with masterfully engraved cartouches and vignettes as is the case here. This map is a case in point- it is a nearly exact copy of a by the Dutch mapmaker Nicolaes Visscher II(1649-1702) Excptionally detailed and quite decorative. The map features two beautifully engraved cartouches and rich cartographic detail including pictorial topography. The Hydrographic Office. A sub-department of the British Admiralty, was established in 1795 and issued its first officially published Admiralty chart in November 1800. Admiralty charts show navigational hazards such as reefs and wrecks, and navigational aids such as lights, buoys and beacons. Nineteenth-century charts may show coastal elevations and topographic views, useful to identify landfalls and prominent fixing marks.
