1895. BACON'S CYCLING MAP OF SCOTLAND. VERY RARE ITEM
Bacon's Cycling Map of Scotland. No printed date. But circa 1895. A very rare item. I have not managed to find any other examples for sale anywhere in the world. It is a large'fold out' Cloth map inside hardback covers. Folded it is approx 19cm by 12cm. Opened out it is very large, covering the whole of Scotland with smaller, more detailed inserts for Glasgow and Edinburgh. The rear has had nearly all the fold lines reinforced with clear tape and some of the fold lines on the front have also been similarly reinforced with tape. This is to prevent tearing. As many of these large, fold out' maps can be torn, as there are so many layers to open. This tape discolours with age. But some of it is now loose and could probably be removed if desired. Obviously it would be preferable without the tape. But at least there isn't the ... moresame tearing that can occur with these large sheets. It is in overall very fair condition, especially for an item which was probably regularly handled and used. I have checked the COPAC record for this item and circa 1895 is suggested as a likely publication date. Also there is an advertisement for Marroitt and Cooper inside the covers. And I have discovered that this firm was purchased by Humber in 1899, so the advertisemet must predate that, so it is a pretty accurate date. It is a very early cycling publication. Later editions mention'cycling and motoring' But this map predates motoring. I currently have a couple of the later. circa 1920) motoring and cycling' maps for sale on Ebay. Listed in the'maps' category. Please look out for them. It is unlikely that you will find another example for sale anywhere in the world. The final photo below is a view of the rear.
1863. TIME GUN MAP EDINBURGH LEITH . 5" TO A MILE. VERY RARE. VERY DETAILED.
Hislop's Time Gun Map of Edinburgh. Leith and Suburbs. Printed in 1863 by W Johnston, Geographers and Engravers to the Queen. This is a very rare. And very detailed item. The scale is 5.2 inches to the mile. So it is detailed enough to show many individual properties and therefore gives a complete view of Edinburgh at that time. However it has another more important role. In that the map centres on Edinburgh Castle, where the 1 o'clock gun is sounded most days. Radiating out across the map is a series of numbered. Concentric circles. The position of your property in relation to the circles would tell you how many seconds it would take for the sound of the gun to reach you, thereby aiding very accurate time keeping. I would expect that the numbers on the circles represent seconds. The one o'clock gun began in 1861. So this map ... morewas produced soon after its introduction. It is a very rare item. I have not managed to find any other examples for sale anywhere in the world. And even all our great national institutions such as the British Library, National Library of Scotland, etc. appear not to have a copy of this item. It is a large'fold out' map. Approx 55cm by 50cm. Along the edges of the map clear tape has been applied to reinforce the edges. There is also clear tape along all the fold lines at the rear, again to strengthen the map and minimise tearing. There is NO tape across the front of the map, other than at the edges, as previously mentioned. The rear tape is not as evident on the front of the map as the lower photo would seem to suggest. The flash photography seems to have highlighted it. It is in good condition with little damage. So the tape did its job. This map was originally in the possession of the Edinburgh Philosophical Institution. There is a very small rubber stamp ownership mark to the rear a1.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*3Ad%60%3Ea1%3E-1400e6b7ae4-0xfe-

The 1877 volume, in 212 pages, emphasized that it featured a“new and original compilation and ready reference index.to] the entire railroad system of the North America, with a special page to explain all the abbreviations and to demonstrate how the index system worked by using the Ohio map as an example. Large Antique Map " Country Around Fasque "
This is a large contour map of the central area of Scotland. It came from Fasque House home of the Gladstone family which is in the County of Kincardinshire bordering with Forfarshire. I have attempted to show the map as complete but quite difficult to do- however the piece is whole with panels of paper onto cloth/linen and it measures 44 x 40 inches. Condition is really quite good with minimal damage but obviously with some creasing. There is a dirty brown colour which I show on Pic.3 and I cleaned a part off with a barely damp cloth but would prefer not to do any further- it seems to be a dusty stain or such. If you look at Pics.3& 5 you can see that circles have been drawn with Fasque at the centre the radii being scribed at 5 mile intervals. I think that the inference is that Fasque is the centre of the Earth) The map was published ... morein Southampton in 1903 being from an earlier of 1894 revision. The printer was Edward Stafford Ltd. Cartographers to His Majesty Edward 7, I suppose. If I can be of any assistance further to this please ask. Postage Worldwide will not be expensive at printed paper rate.
