GENUINE ANTIQUE ADMIRALTY CHART OF KIRKCUDBRIGHT BAY Hydrographic charts or Admiralty charts are maps designed as aids to navigation at sea. They are produced by the British Admiralty. The Hydrographic Office. A sub-department of the British Admiralty, was established in 1795 and issued its first officially published Admiralty chart in November 1800. Admiralty charts show navigational hazards such as reefs and wrecks, and navigational aids such as lights, buoys and beacons. Nineteenth-century charts may show coastal elevations and topographic views, useful to identify landfalls and prominent fixing marks. They may also include details of coastal forts and other defenses. Admiralty charts are continually updated and corrected. This an original antique map of Scotland engraved by Sidney Hall and published by Adam& Charles Black in Edinburgh in 1851. The map shows excellent detail and is printed on two sheets. 1628 Lovely Mercator Map of Scotland
1630 Mercator Map- Schotia Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. This nicely decorative map of Scotland comes from that ... morenew edition of'Atlas Minor' In this case a German text one of 1630. Mercator gives it a rather linear, elongated look but cannot fit in the Shetland islands to the north. There is a nice cartouche title in the top left and a banner scale of distance in the top right. The map measures 5.5" by 7.5" Has outline hand colouring and is in good condition with some textual showthrough from the reverse. The map is guaranteed to be over 380 years old. this is a large fold out map which has hard back covers titled" the first complete county atlas of scotland" 36 maps by herman moll 1725.this has been reproduced by r.s.shearer and son of sterling in 1896.when folded out the map measures approx 40" 24.5" as one large map! not sure where the 36 maps come in. this has one little grubby mark otherwise it is in nice used condition.i have enclosed a fair few photos. a great look at scotland in the early 1700s.i have many more maps and other items you can view in my ebay shop!Check out my!Be sure to add me to your! 1607 Hole Map Scotland Genuine Original Handcoloured Framed Glasgow Edinburgh
Scotia Regnum" A very early 17th Century map of Scotland by William Hole(Gull Hole Scup" bottom right) First issued in 1607 in William Camden's"Britannia" with later editions 1610 and 1635. A splendidly decorative item with a strapwork cartouche. Large compass rose, and details like a galleon and a sea monster. Lots of enlightening details with lots of placenames, Glasgow(Glasguo" in small letters only- clearly not the important town it is today. The coast line is still very approximate not least along the top, and the shape of most of the islands is not accurate. Lovely mountain symbols even if they are not necessarily marking the site of important mountains. Condition:Seeminly in good condition(I have not seen the item out of the frame) Probably laid down as it lies nicely within the frame. Centrefold as issued ... morejust visible. No apparent damage to the map itself. Photographed through glass- there may be reflections. The map will be sent framed. The Hogarth frame in pretty good condition. Has a very nice 1794 foldout map, Mathews's New& Correct Plan of the City and Suburbs of Bristol, including the Hotwells an Clifton and the new Buildings, down to the year 1794.
