It is from the1857 edition of Alexander G. Findlay's Classical Atlas to Illustrate Ancient Geography. London: W. Tegg& Co. It is drawn and engraved by Findlay whose name appears in the bottom right margin. The publishing place and name appear in the bottom center. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 8 3/4 by 10 1/2 inches on a 9 1/2 by 12" page with a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition with overall tonal aging and original handcolor with a centerfold as issued. Printed on heavy paper and blank on the reverse. It is basically as seen in the pics. There are a couple of minor light smudges on the edges as seen in the pics, otherwise it is very clean with no distracting defects to mention. Exquisitely detailed 19th-century Steiler map of Scotland
On offer is a steel-engraved German map of Scotland dating to 1873 and published by Adolf Stieler in his famous Handatlas(formally titled"Hand-Atlas über alle Theile der Erde und über das Weltgebäude. or“Handy atlas of all parts of the world and of the universe” The maps measure 18 in by 14 in, with center folds as issued. The map is incredibly detailed for its time and was engraved by Justus Perthes of Gotha. One of the most important German cartographic engravers of the 19th century. He and Stieler published a total of 10 editions of the Handatlas between 1816 and 1944. This map is from the sixth edition, which is widely considered the epitome of his art in terms of scientific accuracy and unsurpassed relief. This is an original engravings. They were produced by experts in the relevant field, and intended for educational use, so were meticulously accurate, as well as works of art in their own right. GENERAL NOTE ON CONDITION: The prints from this encyclopaedia series are over 120 years old. And there is the expected evidence of age, which may include toning especially at the page edges, foxing, handling marks, slight waviness of the paper and a degree of fragility. Most maps and engravings from this period were bound into books, rather than issued separately. That is the case with this series, and the plates were carefully bound in, using tabs, a method that minimises damage to folded plates/ maps. This is an 1871 engraved map of Scotland. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Has nice circular inset of Paris. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. HIGHLY DETAILED ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP, KELVINSIDE, NEAR GLASGOW 1893
KELVINSIDE 1893 SHEET NUMBER 6.01 BRAND NEW. UNUSED IN SUPERB CONDITION This map is taken from the 1/2500 plans and reproduced by Alan Godfrey at about 15 inches to the mile. It is highly detailed, even showing individual houses, schools, works, churches and covers an area of about one and a half square miles This very detailed map covers an area of NW Glasgow. Together with smaller portions of Renfrewshire and Dumbartonshire. Gilbert Bell describes it as an area where"one can almost sense the energy of a great city undergoing dramatic change. Fields await development. Roads are laid out in the full expectation that buildings will soon line them. A railway is under construction and gas works ooze power for home and factory. Glasgow in 1893 was growing spectacularly. Everything shown here within the city boundary had only been annexed ... morein 1891 and everything beyond that boundary would be annexed in 1912. There is no central feature to the map, which includes part of Kelvinside(bottom right) part of Maryhill(top right) extends westward to the then city boundary and includes, within Renfrewshire, parts of Jordanhill and Anniesland, here largely undeveloped. But there is much of interest on the map. There are several railways, including the Stobcross Branch with Great Western Road station, part of the CR's Glasgow Central Line, the Forth& Clyde Canal, Kelvindale Paper Works, River Kelvin, Gas Works No 2 and 4, Beaconsfield Road and Montgomerie Crescent, Royal Lunatic Asylum, Claythorn, old ironstone pits, Temple of Garscube. Rare Historic Georgian Scottish Document Gen Johnstone Corehead Moffat Dumfries
The plan/map measures 63.5 inches X 31 inches. Plan of the lands of Corehead lying in the parif's(parish) of Moffat. County of Dumfries belonging to Gen Will Johnstone. Surveyed April 1808 by Jos Udney. It has been rolled up so I had to weight it to take the photos. It is paper on a linen back. It is creased and very slighty frayed/torn(1 inch) at the outer edges but for a document over 200 years old a remarkable survivor. I dont know the provenance but it was bought in a Scottish auction a few years ago and forgotten.Now listed to enable this piece of Scottish history to be researched and head back home. It is very interesting as there is a hand inscribed poem that I have photographed. When Zions king was robbed of his sight. His witnesses in Scotland put to flight. These are the first two lines. Lots of detail in old measures and scales ... moreetc. Too much to list. I have no idea of value but this is a genuine antique.Will send minumum of first class signed for.
