This is a great vintage MAP of SCOTLAND and it was taken out of an 1883 People's Cyclopedia. It was drawn& engraved by Fisk& See. New York. In its portrait presentation there is one fold in the middle. The SCALE In Miles- is about 27 miles to an inch. Key Details include a line for Railways plus heights of Mountains in feet. Towns with over 100,000 population are marked as are County Towns. The map has an overall width of about 10.6 inches with margins included while its height is about 13.2 inches with its margins included. The map is in 6 colors. This is an original antique map with hand coloring as issued from Carey's Family Cabinet Atlas(Philadelphia: Carey. Lea& Blanchard, 1834) The map is not mounted nor matted being sold as a single sheet as seen in the first picture. A very nice miniature map with great color and crisp detail. The map image is approximately 3 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches on a 4 1/2 by 6 3/4" page. A nice margin all around for matting. The map is in excellent condition with some darkening around the edges. It is a dark impression with bright vibrant hand coloring as issue, blank on the reverse. The map is very clean. The color is superb and very accurately represented in the picture. 1628 Lovely Mercator Map of East Africa, Prester John Kingdom
1628 Mercator Map- Abissinorum Sive Pretiosi Joannis Imperiorum Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. This nicely decorative ... moremap of East Africa comes from that new edition of'Atlas Minor' In this case a French text one of 1628. Prester John was a mythical Christian king supposedly ruling over a kingdom in modern day Ethiopia and Somalia. There is a superb cartouche title in the top left with Van den Keere shown as the engraver. The map measures 5.5" by 7.5" Has outline hand colouring and is in good condition. An original folded map published in 1888 in the Chambers Encyclopædia. Sheet measures approx 26.5cm x 31.5cm with a single horizontal fold as issued. An attractive map with nice printed colour. The printed area is generally very clean and bright with a good clear impression; the odd light mark and some mild discolouration along the fold. But very minor. In the margins some tanning towards the edges and some creasing around the top left corner; untidiness on the bottom edge where originally bound. Verso blank and very clean. First class postage in the UK is £1.20. I’ll post it supported by some light rigid board; packaging is 70p which includes the 19p commission that ebay charges on the postage cost. Up for you consideration is the antique 1794 map of Scotland. It was published by Laurie& Whittle No 53 Fleet Street. It measures print size is 20" x 22" the frame is 32 x 34 and it is matted. As you can see for 220 years old it is in rather nice condition with minor foxing(see pictures) I bought this from an estate and they collected many Scottish pieces. Glottiana Praefectura Superior the Upper Ward of Clyds-Dayl. Timothy pont. The map is approx 20" x 14.5" inner boundary. Page size is approx 19" x 23" and is probably 1654 and from a 17thc book published by blaeu. The centrefold has been tape strengthened. Especially towards the bottom, and various small tears have been taped- using archival acid free non yellowing tape. The margins still have some roughness which would be mostly covered if mounted and framed. The margins are a bit grubby and some mild foxing. Also some mild foxing/ grubbiness to the map- and is evenly gently sunned. However features names colouring etc, are all clear. and overall could still be said to be fair condition for age. This will be posted rolled in strong tube. And if mounted and framed should look very pleasing. A very fine 18 th century map by William Creech. Edinburgh dated 1786 The map is dissected in 16 sections. Laid on linen and it folds into its original marbled and labelled slip case.
