The Aesthetic movement. Popular in the United states in the 1870s and 1880s, focused on the importance of art and good design. Aesthetic furniture was characterized by flat surfaces. Stylized inlaid decoration and shallow incises lines. Herter furniture was inspired by many periods and styles. The Herter brothers incorporated motifs from classical Greece and Rome. Ancient Egypt, Renaissance Italy, the Middle East, 18 th century France and Japan into their own unique designs. Expensive woods such as walnut. Rose wood, cherry and maple were used in the fabrication of the furniture. The HERTER rocking chair is as I purchased it at an estate auction in 1969. It has the original fabric and finish. Gold painted design details surround the fabric on the back rest. The wood. Fabric and trim have a soft aged patina. Measurements: 39 inches from floor to top of back 16 ½ inches from floor to top of seat 17 inches seat depth from back to front 14 ½ inches wide across back…19 inches wide across front FINE VINTAGE CONDITION NOTED: There is slight movement in the right side armrest. Wood on the seat has been repaired where the armrest spindles meet the chair seat. The separation in the wood is still visible. The repair was done before I purchased the chair at an estate sale of an old mansion in our local area. During the time we have owned the chair.
