The deep cognac mahogany color has been well retained, clearly a chest that was protected properly from the damaging rays of the sun, the grains of the wood glowing through years of waxing. Beneath the top, a thin blade surface slides from the top, a feature identifying this chest as a"Bachelor" chest of drawers- this convenient device was quite popular during the period, allowing the chest of drawers to be used actively as a desk surface for a quick letter or for reading and studying in the evening hours. The blade is crafted of pine secondary woods with glue blocks giving strength to the overall frame, this covered with a brown replaced felt and edged in mahogany veneers with two tiny cast brass original knobs at the facade. Four graduated drawers line the case. These with period circular stamped brass hardware in the original holes(exception with the lowest drawer. Where the hardware is slightly mismatched and holed just beside the original holes) flanking original stamped brass keyhole escutcheons. The drawer face is framed in projecting cockbead molding, the frame dovetailed front and back. Inside of the case, some drawers have partial dustboards, others are had partial dustboards which are now absent and replaced with 20th Century runners on either side. The antique chest of drawers rests over pl

The concave shape of the skirt allows a chair to be easily pulled up to the table while retaining the austerity of an almost squared profile. The right and left sides of the case are embellished with a circular satinwood inlaid ring, lending harmony to the round profile of the brass pulls. The top of the case is incredibly attractive, the right and left sides book-matched plum pudding mahogany veneers of a deep and warm tone, well patinated and framed in the same stringer satinwood inlay- note the loss at the back left corner of stringer inlay. The whole rests over tapered mahogany legs terminating in brass casters. Two original, the other two mostly original. This is a wonderful acquisition for anyone passionate about the Hepplewhite.
