Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. A similarly elaborate pattern embellished the circumferential ledge/skirt of the bezel, as well as an intricate perimeter of finely serrated“teeth” surrounding and securing the gemstone. However a substantial portion of this ornate metal work no longer remains discernible. As there is heavy wear to the sides and back of the band as well as to the bezel skirt. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Houghton) is thought to have been commissioned about 1522 by Shah Isma'il, the founder of the Safavid Dynasty, as a present for his son, Prince Tahmasp. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Houghton) is thought to have been commissioned about 1522 by Shah Isma'il, the founder of the Safavid Dynasty, as a present for his son, Prince Tahmasp. Court artisans and craftsmen continued their work on the 759 folios for the better part of two decades. As a consequence, the book offers a fascinating mixture of artistic styles. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time.
