This piece is from Korea and is about 20 or so years old. The exterior design was handcrafted by a Korean artisan who cut each piece of mother of pearl and abalone shell to create the likeness of a peacock surrounded by a blooming bouquet of flowers and butterflies. Please note that the color of the mother of pearl changes depending on the light source- when under natural light. It has a silvery iridescent glow and under interior lighting(incandescent bulb) it has an amber glow. The entire piece is made out of wood painted with a black lacquer finish. The interior is wood also(unpainted) I believe pine, but I'm not exactly sure(it's definitely NOT particle board, though) and it features 2 separate sections(left& right) each with different smaller compartments inside, the details of which are described below. There are 2 sliding doors to access the right and left side and it does have a lock, but I no longer have the key. The size of the entire armoire is 7ft(L) x 6.25ft(H) x 2.25ft(D) approx. It disassembles into 6 major pieces(if I'm not mistaken) top section. 2 sliding doors, bottom section, left section and right section. The top section holds the entire piece together. An incredible accomplishment. The foundry work executed in this piece is above reproach- each gilt bronze mount is hand chased to the highest quality, mercury gilded and of outstanding detail. An angular and commanding work, the Armoire is surmounted by a triangular crest that is removable from the body with two dowels on either side- this is flanked by a pair of carved mahogany(replaced) finials. Beneath the projecting crown molding, an incredible gilt bronze mount of an angel riding through ocean waves in a cornucopia pulled along by swans while leaving behind a trail of shells is simply stunning. Flanking this on either side are opposing gilt bronze solider masks. The top is removable. Lifting off of large steel screws inside of the armoire to allow the door to be lifted from it's hinges for easier transportation. On either side of the door, pedestaled on large tapered columns rest large and highly impressive patinated and gilt bronze Classical female heads with bowed ribbon holding her hair back. These are the largest mounts of flawless execution we've seen on a piece from this period, each a stunning work of art in it's own merit. A hand filed steel screw secures each head to the case. Beneath the column, intense gilded Lion Paw's in the Regency manner complete the form. The arched door swings open with use of the original key. Revealing a golden oak interior of four shelves and a single locking drawer. This drawer is hand dovetailed with solid oak secondary woods, when removed revealing an illegible signature in period script along the dust board. Large lot of misc. architectural pieces. Circa 19th century. All have deeply bevelled. Recessed panels. There are 2 matched pairs and 2 individuals. One individual has bottom trim and ornate see-through fretwork. The other single has top and bottom trim with carved center crest. They all have gothic flair. May be made of walnut, but not positive. Winner gets all 6 Victorian pieces shown. For size reference, the panel at lower left measures 19 5/8 inches wide and 15 1/4 inches tall and upper left measures 21 3/8 inches by 8 1/2 inches. Dates from the 1930s–40s. This appears to be all solid mahogany. This has breadboard ends to support the drop down lid. Drop the lid down to expose a wonderful detailed interior that consists of multiple drawers and multiple cubbyholes. A carved raised panel center door and two cleverly disguised hidden compartments behind flame finial spindles. The writing surface is really large There are some nicks and dings due to use and age of the piece. The four drawers underneath the writing surface are all dovetail and all oxbow. This Berkey& Gay dining set consists of a 3-leaf table. 8 chairs, 1 china hutch, 1 buffet and 1 sideboard. It is made of walnut, with many sections being bookmatched figured walnut- absolutely beautiful. All pieces are matching, and feature the metal medallion used in Berkey& Gay's furniture from the 1920's-1940's. Our best guess is that these pieces were made in the 20's. They're in excellent condition for this vintage. You'll see some very slight damage, shown in the last 4 photos. The spindles of the stool back are thru tennoned in the top rail and the leg ends are also tennoned through the stool seat. The leg stretchers are all pegged in place through the legs and the legs. Spindles, and ... moretop rail are all hand chamfered. The seat is Pine and everything else is Oak or Ash. Condition Good Pre-owned with use and wear including some stable cracks to the pine seat located on the top and bottom which are distinct from one another and do not meet. The leg ends protrude slightly above the seat where they are thru tenoned. The seat has finish wear and scratches with a small saw mark on the left side middle of the seat(viewed from the front where the seat narrows) And there is some green paint on a leg as pictured. Made of cast iron. This is a heavy and very attractive item. It would look great on anyone's desk! The first letter in the company name is unclear-the stamp is very dusty and a good cleaning may improve the quality of that first letter. A local historian believes the name was'HIX' and reports that it was an above average. Quality furniture store that had closed by the early'40s. There's a ship's anchor painted on each side. The flower stand is a particularly good piece. Pictures. Vases and ornaments are of the eighteenth century. The last picture shows a display of rosewood furniture made in 1850 for the Chicago parlor of William H. Brown, loaned by his granddaughter. The chair upholstering and draperies are of green brocade and the table cover is scarlet broadcloth embroidered in gold.
