ANTIQUE FRENCH MARRIAGE ARMOIRE
This auction is for a most unusual antique armoire from Normandy. Most probably from the Caux region. The carving on this piece indicates that it was made in the provinces by a local woodworker. Everything about this stunning piece shows that it was entirely hand done and not for the mass market. It was most probably made between 1750 and 1850. All the joinery is double doved or butterfly. It is made of solid wood except for the interior of the dome top and the back. It was made. As was typical of the day, as a knockdown. The doors, base, back and dome top are all separate pieces. The separate dove carving indicates that this was a marriage armoire given as a dowry piece. Most were expertly done but this has all the earmarks of one made perhaps by the father of the bride. A recent addition to the piece is the ... moreadditional cut in the doors doors which allow them to completely foldaway so that the piece can be used as an entertainment unit without the encumbrance of traditional doors which can only partially be.opened. This beautiful piece has been intricately designed with inlay and burled wood veneers. There are 3 tall doors. The patterns on the 2 outer doors add so much character to this armoire. The center door is covered in a huge arched beveled mirror that appears to be original. The mirror has some fogging and dark spots, very typical of a piece this old. There are no breaks, chips or cracks ... morein the mirror that I can see. All the doors have key holes, however we do not have a key. There are 4 brass capped feet supporting the front and 2 feet supporting the back. Molded brass trim adorns the crest above the doors and the corners around the arched mirror top. The center cabinet has a bar in the top for hanging items. There are shelves in the side doors and lots of room for more shelves to be added. The center hinge on the right door is broken and the side panel has bowed a little because of it. There are several pieces of inlay missing from the design on each of the outer doors and the veneer is so old it has cracked and split in many areas. Overall this piece is in nice condition, it just needs a little tlc. I do not know the maker or exact date it was made. This armoire weighs 450 pounds. Hand carved in high relief, the crest and details are beautiful. The original finish is in very fine condition with only minor mars or wear and warm patina. In the base is a"secret" drawer with sliding cover. Original hardware includes a double throw working lock. Inside are later closet poles and adjustable shelves. The interior is oak and birdseye maple for contrast. There is some wormy walnut in the base. This is a very nice 3 door wardrobe circa 1900. Made in France or Possibly Italy as a lot of there furniture were very similar. The condition is very good. Its pollard oak and walnut with satinwood marquetry inlay to each door to the side, as well as rosewood inlay. At some time to the back has had wood worm. It looks treated, but we have also treated it as well. lt comes in several part so its easy to transport. To the base it has brass feet and also to the top brass cups. The center has a drawer to the base. The the rest is all hanging space as well as the sides. The mirror is the original one which shows some specks with age. Measurements are 76 wide.83 high, 24 deep. We have the 3 keys for each door.

Kahn& Cie in Paris. Kahn was a leading cabinet maker and bronzier who worked in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, according to Sotheby's. The pediment has neoclassical guilloche, reed and tie, and foliate motifs. The frieze and side panels feature patera, rosettes, and egg and dart motifs. The center door has putti and swags, lion mask, and lower panel with classical mask, arrow and drapery, and foliate ... moremotifs. The sides feature floral and geometric parquetry inlay and marquetry inlay depicting flaming torches, surrounded by bronze mounts with foliate and tied ribbon motifs. The cabinet rests upon four enormous animal claw and ball feet. Each side cabinet and center cabinet have adjustable notched selving with two shelves each. Overall condition is very good.
