Classic Vintage Antique "Chifferobe" Wardrobe Armoire Early 20th Century
This is an early 1900's antique"chifferobe" or"chifforobe" or"chiffarobe" I.e. wardrobe with 5 drawers and a small mirrored door on one side, and a full size wardrobe door on the other side. Behind the full size door is a place for hanging garments with an iron hanging rod. A couple of the drawers need some work but everything else functions normally. Beautiful wood grain with wear and tear that would be expected for age of furniture. Has been in continual use for 75 to 95 years! The inside of the chifferobe is somewhat more rustic than the exterior. One drawer bottom is quite interesting(see photo# 6)I don't know if this wooden crating material was a replacement or if it originally came that way. Either way. Antique CHIFFEROBE. ARMOIRE, CLOSET.c1907.5 drawers with original glass pulls.very clean except the last drawer needs some additional cleaning. Top drawer has WORKING lock. Smaller'hatbox' compartment has original beveled mirror in the door. Larger door on wardrobe side locks and also has the original beveled mirror. I had to reset the mirror as it had wiggled down and once inside found the label from the glass company in Tennessee dated August 1907(didn't think of it at the time. But I should have taken a photo of the tag) Inside this long side, is the original metal rod for your hanging clothes. It is original, sturdy, and strong. This chifferobe stands 64 inches tall outside. This is a wonderful small WOOD ANTIQUE ARMOIRE or CLOSET CABINET WARDROBE. Perhaps cherry wood. Because of it's size and stature I believe that it could be a salesmans sample. It stands 22 1/2' tall at the center top of the crest, is 14' wide and 7' deep with arched moulded doors and layered moulded bracket feet. I am not sure where it was made but I'm guessing the 19th century. It could be American, English or perhaps French. It's in overall nice condition though it is an antique. The hinges are a bit loose, there are some little bits of wood pieces that have gone missing and I think the shelves were added. Understand, this is a vintage item. Vintage armoire with great storage. Very solid piece all around. Three drawers inside along with a rod for hanging. Finish looks pretty good all around. Only a few imperfections. There a few chips in the veneer but nothing major. I do not have the key to this piece. Come check it out! Dimensions: 72.5" tall X 36.5" wide X 21.5" deep. Will deliver locally for $30. Found some really cool history on the furniture maker for this particular piece: Louis Lebus came to England from Breslau. Germany(now Wroclaw, Poland) arriving in Hull in the 1840s, and set up as cabinet maker in that city. By 1857 Lebus moved to London’s East End and was joined in the trade by his two sons Harris and Sol. In 1883 the company moved to larger premises in Tabernacle Street(in the East End of London) By 1899 the Harris Lebus furniture factory had become ... morethe largest furniture manufacturing firm in England employing over 1000 people. In 1900 Lebus bought some land by Tottenham Hale and constructed a large purpose built factory. Furniture was manufactured using very advanced machinery for the time. Century Solid Wood Armoire 2 lg/3 smaller drawers, partitions, casters
Bought this used but have never used it much myself. Except to store sewing supplies. It's in very good condition: there are a few small wear marks along drawer& door edges consistent with age/use; they could easily be covered with a bit of stain or even a brown permanent marker. Only other issue is the left door's upper latch is missing a screw, but the doors still close just fine, as do all the drawers. The casters make it fairly easy to maneuver around. If you have questions about drawer/compartment sizing, or other concerns, please send me a message and I'll be happy to answer them and/or take additional photos for you. Excellent quality piece with a lot of style and a very distinctive unusual look. The doors on the top have a 3 dimensional checkerboard effect and the bottom has an interesting slanted base. Very much in the style of Paul Evans and the Brutalist movement of the mid century time period. It has a very hearty and substantial feel to it. Measures 64" tall x 38" wide x 20" deep. It has two shelves for the right side(not shown in the photo) Good vintage condition. General light wear and surface scratching from years of use. There is a veneer chip on the left side of the top in the back corner. The facade has some scratches around the entire border.
