The brass is thin and there are some very tiny dents, which might be expected from age and use, but we don't think they are large enough to show up in our pictures. On the bottom the brass wraps around a heavier metal base. The metal is not iron because it does not have rust. It may be tin or some lead alloy. The main body of the the candlesticks are very ornate and neither has any damage. We have seen soom like these for sale but the do not have the ornate body or the lead like bases. They have been handed down through several generations of the family. CONDITION: There are several small nicks from age and use. The base on is dented in slightly which makes it out of round(I have tried to show this in the pictures) The other one is slightly raised where the base top screws into the base. It will unscrew but won't screw in all the way due to old polish build up on the screw part. It might be able to be cleaned so it can be tightened. They do need a good polishing. Pair Early Antique Brass Epergne Bases Or Candlestick Holders
This is a very good quality pair of early epergne bases or candlestick holders. I believe they date mid-19th century. The detail on them is just beautiful. Unfortunately. Both of the glass vase parts are missing. There are only the brass holders and a small piece of glass in each. If you have glass vases that fit, you're in! Otherwise, they'd make a classy looking pair of candlesticks. But I'm not sure how to get the glass out though. They each measure 5 inches tall(12.7 cm) The bases are approximately 5 inches wide(12.7 cm) based on where you measure from. The little glass holder inserts are 3/4 inches tall by 1/2 inch wide(1.9 cm x 1.27 cm) The design on these is just wonderful. The detail is so intricate. Overall. Given their age, I believe they're in very good condition. As you can see in the photos. There is tarnishing ... morein many places. Also, the top sections turn and do not tighten up. A fabulous and most unusual pair of Victorian Blackamoor candlesticks cast in heavy English brass. The boy holds two torches and stands on a plinth with integral birds that look like Swans. And standing on Lion's paw feet. What makes this pair special is the presence of an English registration diamond stamped to the top of each plinth. Unfortunately hard to read but in this format date the sticks between 1871- 1879 possibly withe the date letter I for the year 1872. Excellent condition having been professionally re-polished to gleam, each stands 9 1/4" tall with a base measuring 4 1/2" square. These are numbered: 5217 on bottoms, and have other markings(by an unknown maker) and are cast in a Baroque or Rococo Style. The upper disks have rounded, feathered swirls with beading, and the bases are triple footed- ending in'dolphin-head' shaped feet. Rounded upper sections have lipped rims, and each measures 11-3/4" tall, by 6-1/2" width. This pair is in mint shape without dents, dings, bends or other issues.
