SHIPS WORLDWIDE! Stately and heavy! This piece is made of metal and has the B&H foundry mark(Bradley& Hubbard) on the back. It has the bust of Dickens. Hence the thought it is a bookend. Due to its weight, would make a great doorstop as well since it weighs almost 3 1/2 pounds. The piece is about 5" wide by 6.5" tall and 2.5" deep, being the larger piece made by B&H it is harder to come by. Some of the original felt is still on the bottom. In good used condition with patina and some signs of age and use. The metal looks to be a brass or bronze color with the weight of cast iron. I'm told these were cast iron pieces. Antique Austrian Bronze Owl by Franz Bergmann, Vienna, jewelry box, door stop
Fabulous antique Franz Bergmann bronze of an owl resting on the book. Book opens into a jewelry box. This piece dates to early 20th century. Owl has beautiful dirty gold patina. On top of the brown book and fabulous glass eyes. Bronze Size- Height 10.5in. Base is 6in long by 4.5in wide. It is heavy- around 4.3kg(9.5lbs) It is marked Geschutzt on the bottom of the book as shown in one of the photos. It means patented in Austrian- mark common to many Bergman bronzes. I sold an owl just like this one last year that had BERG written in same location as Geschutzt. Berg is another common mark used by early bronzes- you can see a bronze dog inkwell in another listing of mine with this mark. If you have any questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me. Erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Noted for his detailed and colorful work, and signing either a'B' in an urn-shaped cartouche or'Nam Greb' Bergman' in reverse. These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. His father Franz Bergmann was a professional chaser from Gablonz/Bohemia who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann(1861– 1936) inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his fathers workshop. He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors. Hired temporarily by the workshops. At the turn of the 19th/20th Century there were about fifty workshops producing Vienna Bronzes. Large and heavy gilt bronze“Owl on the Book” by Franz Bergmann. Dating to the first quarter of the 20 th century. Owl is standing on the book which open to reveal small compartment. Bronze is large and heavy enough to be used as bookend or door stop. Bronze is marked Geschutzt which means patented in Austrian as many Bergmann bronzes were. This particular bronze does not have BERG mark as my other listing for cold painted version of the same bronze. Vintage SCULPTURE AXE TREE LOG Woodsmen Door Stop HEAVY Cast Iron Bronze Steel ?
This is a fantastic Vintage Sculpture! It is a very heavy metal. Not sure exactly but the base looks and feels to be cast iron or steel and has a coating on it like bronze and the axe looks like it is made of steel. It is of a log/tree stump with an axe in it, the stump measures 6 1/4" tall x 3 1/2" round and the axe measures 5 3/4" tall making this a total of 12" tall. This can be used as a door stop as well. It is in good condition and very unusual, I could not find any makers/artists marks on it. This came from my great aunt's estate. She was a woman of wealth& high stature in her community. This is a Very Heavy 6 pounds 8 ounces 9" tall Solid Cast Bronze Door Stop Sailing Ship from the Arts and Crafts period. It has a stamp on the backside that I can't make out. But it is shown in one of the photos. This still has the original patina, and is quite old, and as heavy as I have ever seen a door stop! Check it out.
