By 1833 he operated his own business on the Rue Notre Dame de Lorette. Where he eventually met and befriended Achille Collas. An artists and aspiring inventor who had invented a mechanical device that reproduced the impression of painted canvases and also an apparatus intended to mechanically reduce the size of sculpted statues. This is an important issue. And I will get back to that in a moment. In 1838. The two men founded a partnership business called?Collas& Barbedienne? and started to manufacture bronzes. They specialized in antique reproductions and developed new processes for patinations and colored bronzes. Here they would reproduce many sculptures by Barbedienne himself. As well as many others by renowned artists. Collas died in 1859. And by then Barbedienne employed some 300 workers. And produced as many as 1,200 subjects originally cast by notable artists such as Michelangelo. Luca Della Robbia and Antoine-Louis Barye and continued using the reduction concept developed by Collas. Barbedienne died on March 21. 1892 and his nephew, Gustave Le Blanc, took over the foundry. 19th C. Gilt Bronze Calling Card Tray; Dionysus , Levillain, Barbedienne
Offered at auction is a 19 th century calling card tray made by the premier French Bronze foundry Barbedienne and designed by the sculpture Ferdinand Leveillain. This tray is cast from bronze and has a gilt surface. The subject depicted on the central plaque of the tray is classical in nature and seems. In my opinion, to have a Dionysic theme. I am not totally familiar with all the adventures of the Greek god Dionysus but this tableau seems to depict the young Dionysus, reclining beneath grape vines, being attacked by a hydra and being defended by two male devotees. That the reclining individual is Dionysus(Bacchus in the Roman world) is indicated by the grape arbor, the leopard skin he is laying on and his thyrsus staff lying beside his couch, all attributes indicating the identification of the young god. Around the central plaque are repetitive ... moredepictions of grape leaves reinforcing the theme of the central plaque. The tray is cast in bronze and stands 1 1/8 inches tall at its lip and is 7 5/8 inches long by 5 ¾ wide. The condition of this tray is quite good with the little wear to the low relief sculpture that Levillain was well known for. The front of the tray has a gilt surface that has been partially restored to its original look showing only a few dark spots and some gilt loss. The unseen back of the tray still has some gilt surface but also has loss to its gilding around its edges. The central plaque is signed by Levillain at the lower right and the back of the tray has the standard engraved mark of the Barbedienne foundry. This is a possible grand tour item. This is a nice antique tray and would look good on a desk or table for the receipt or dispensing of calling cards. This tray should be of interest to any collector of neo-classical art or to anyone involved with wine and enology given that the Dionysus was the giver of the knowledge of wine to mankind. Please see pictures:

Collas Reduction mecanique: Ferdinand Barbedienne was born January 10. 1810 in St-Martin-de-Fresnay. In Calvados. At the age of 13 he went to Paris as an apprentice with a saddler. By 1833 he operated his own business on the Rue Notre Dame de Lorette. Where he eventually met and befriended Achille Collas. An artists and aspiring ... moreinventor who had invented a mechanical device that reproduced the impression of painted canvases and also an apparatus intended to mechanically reduce the size of sculpted statues. Levillain's Classic-themed Bronze Centerpiece; Barbedienne, Fondeur
0 0 1 154 884 Decorum 7 2 1036 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Our solid bronze centerpiece is French. Of course, and measures about 19 inches wide and 6 high, giving it plenty of presence. It's a tribute to Virgil's poetic dialogue between the two musicians, the elder, Menalcas, and the youth, Mopsus, seated in the garden. Each handle features two intense, bearded heads of Bacchus, or Dionysius, the ancient god of ritual madness and ecstasy who is mentioned later in the poem(which you can easily find online) The artist's signature, F. Levillain, appears beneath the rendering of Menalcas and Mopsus, and on one outside edge appears the name Barbedienne, the foremost French bronze foundry. Levillain was a noted, award-winning French medalist and sculptor who died in 1905. DIED in 1905! That means this was probably ... morecreated somewhere between 1860 and 1905. Bronze plaque depicting Mary and infant, signed F. Barbedienne, Fondeur
Bronze plaque by the famous Barbedienne foundry in Paris. It depicts Mary and child and Saint John the Baptist in the background. The plaque has a good dark brown patina and has a ring for hanging on the back. Condition is good: there is a small hole in the bronze as its only flaw. The piece measures 8 1/2” and weighs just under two and a half pounds. The F. Barbedienne foundry was started in Paris in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas. Who was the inventor of a machine that would mechanically reduce statues. They at first produced bronze reductions of antique sculptures of Greek and Roman origin. Their first contract to produce bronzes modeled by a living artist was made in 1843 when they arranged to produce the works of Francois Rude. They barely survived the revolution and financial collapse of 1848 which caused many artists ... moreand foundries to declare bankruptcy. Barbedienne actively pursued contracts with the many sculptors of Paris contracting with David D'Angers, Jean-Baptiste Clesinger, and even producing some casts for Antoine Louis Barye as well as others.
