Here is a late 19 th century/ early 20 th century bronze Grand Tour statue of Michelangelo’s Bacchus. The Roman god of wine. In a reeling pose suggestive of drunkenness. A small satry stands behind him. It has wonderful patina and stands almost 11” tall on a flat black marble base. This small bronze was typical of the souverniers the wealthy American and British tourists would bring home from their“Grand Tour” of Europe. This particular statue would have come from Florence at that time. This is a nice heavy antique bronze and would be a nice addition to any collection. Up for grabs is a bronze cherub boy laying down kissing a bird sculpture on marble. This piece is in nice shape with a minor patina and possibly a few minor bumps on the brass from being moved around many years. Nothing major to report at all. I picked this piece and another signed piece from an estate sale. The only letters that can be made out are the"AUG" which matches up with the other piece where you can see the signature a little more clearly. Possibly made to be used as an ashtray as a cigarette will fit perfectly in the baskets with the bar holding it in. Approx. measurements are 7" tall by 7 1/4" wide. Basket to basket. Great preowned condition with some minor age appropriate wear. There is some light sand like material in the recessed areas. Possibly an early sand cast piece? No chips. Cracks or repairs. Up for sale is a nice Antique Bronze Horse I bought from an antiques dealer. It is in great condition. Has some lovely spots of green patina coming through on some of the detailwork making it stand out beautifully, will grow even more beautiful with age. Was made about a hundred years ago. Cast bronze, it is approximately 8" from nose to tail and 7 1/2" from feet to the top of the ears, it is heavy and weighs almost 3 lbs. This would look great on any mantel, bookshelf, nightstand, desk, in a curio cabinet or on a dresser. Would make the perfect accent for a library, office, den, or living room. Antique German shepherd dog art statue Pompeian Bronze, Paul Herzel, mint, huge
Absolutely stunning decorative statue of a standing male Shepherd. Alert as they always are. Details are incredible. No surprise when the artist is Paul Herzel, name clearly incised on the top of the base. Herzel did numerous figures of people but is more celebrated for his life-like depictions of animals, and German Shepherds seem to have been a favorite subject: there are at least two sets of bookends with Herzel shepherds, one with the dog standing as in my piece; the other, with the dog sitting down. The name Dolf also is incised in the top of the base- I don't know who that is. This was electro-formed(more commonly known as bronze-clad) A manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze(sometimes copper) was made to adhere to a plaster figure by the chemical process of electro-plating. In my last photo, you can see the indentations ... moreon the bottom, the"wicks" where metal loops were embedded, those loops used for suspending the piece in a vat of electro-plating solution. The hooks later would be cut off. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900's to produce decorative household objects which had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces but still were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze of NYC. No maker's mark on this piece. But it was Pompeian who created the bookends mentioned above as well as many other Herzel designs(I have 5 or 6 sets of bookends signed Herzel, all made by Pompeian Bronze) Circa early 1920's. Condition is nearly perfect. No breaks in the cladding. No scratches, one ear(his left one) has a gentle nick/dent; a few tiny flea-bite nicks here and there; and one base corner gently pushed in(front right) Finish is original, shows some wear appropriate to age, but even that is minimal. And it is huge: 14 inches tall. To the tip of his ear; base is 11 1/2 inches X 4 inches. And heavy at 12 pounds. Perfect gift for the Herzel collector or the dog lover. Antique Cast Brass/Bronze Red Monkey Statue Hindu
This is an unusual cast statue. Probably brass or bronze with various mixtures of alloys. It has a distinct red color that may be painted on or fired, or it may be a wax coating added after firing. It features a standing pointed-head and pointed-ear monkey, knees bent, holding a pointed shaped item downward, with a circular ring at the top. The monkey's tail is looped back and attaches to his back, and could be used as a handle for pouring. The base is heart shaped. It is 9.5" tall and weighs 3.5 lbs, so it is a solid, heavy piece. it is finely cast, with nice detail throughout, especially in the lines that represent the monkey's fur. Nice old sculpture or bookend featuring a horse standing calmly with a halter on. Circa 1930. The horse is mounted on a pale green onyx base. This measures 6" tall. 7 3/4" long, 3" wide and weighs 3 lbs. 4 oz. It is in good original antique condition. The horse has some finish loss and a chip off the tip of one ear. The onyx is in very good condition with minor flaws. This shows nicely. The horse is level and firmly attached to the base with no wobbling.
