Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. Yeghishe Derderian was born in Van. Then the Ottoman Empire. Now Turkey. In 1910. He lost all of his relatives in 1915, during the Armenian genocide. In 1922. He came to Jerusalem at the age of 12. To study at the St. James Theological Seminary. This lovely set of Palestinian pottery was purchased as a child living in Lebanon during the 1950s. We often visited Jerusalem and these lovely pieces were manufactured at the time when Palestine was a state and Jerusalem was Jordan. I am selling them as a collection because they all appear to come from the same manufacturer. They are all in excellent condition except for some minors paint chips on the mug and small vase. Dimensions are as follows: the large mug is 4.5" tall. The large vase is 5" tall, small vase is 3.5" tall, candlestick is 3" tall, little pitcher is 3.75" tall and wall vase is 4" Please feel free to contact for further information. There is a re-glued piece which forms the rear handle which apparently repaired an old break. The Samaritans were the ancient guardians of Hebrew Law and once numbered in the millions. It features a slipper shaped body on slightly raised ring base. Spike handle, vertical ribbing over the shoulders and enclosed channel from the fill hole to the nozzle, decorated inside with a Greek letter A. Intact. The round lamp is a Byzantine type, probably from northern Syria. Formed of pale buff clay, it is decorated with scrolls of foliage and bunches of grapes, with a zig-zag and dot pattern on the shoulder.
