Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. A pottery oil lamp made in a mold from rather rough pinkish-buff clay. It has a pointed oval shape. A conical handle at the back ridge, large central fill hole with surrounding ridge, another ridge extending from around the fill hole to the wick hole, with 3 raised dots just above the wick hole. Both shoulders are decorated with a central cross inside a circle with a stylized fish to either side. Remains of a reddish slip adhere to the recessed areas. The base is a raised circle inside of which is a maker's mark of 3 intersecting lines, resembling a simplified Chi-Rho sign. With a sharp carination at the shoulder, and is composed of orange clay. The piriform body has a large central fill hole around which is low relief decoration of swags and dots. The lamp is decorated over its shoulders with radiating parallel lines and has a thick, bifurcated zoomorphic handle, resembling the head of a feline. Between the fill hole and wick hole is as simplified palmette design. Specifically Samaria in Palestine DATE: 6th- 7th Century CE DIMENSIONS: 9.9 cm(3.89 in. long DESCRIPTION: Intact. A mold made pottery oil lamp dating to the Byzantine period in Palestine. The lamp is formed from pinkish clay and rests on a nearly flat base with an ill-defined circle at its center. The upper surfaces are decorated in relief with alternating vertical lines in groups and bunches of grapes inside circles. A small saddle shaped handle rises from the rear. Decorated with a single central vertical line. The small nozzle and wick hole are decorated with a larger bunch of grapes motif.Minimal signs of lime encrustation and faint evidence of carbon black at the wick hole. An outstanding example. Europe, and Northern Africa to light their homes at night. They ... morewere fueled by fish oil, animal oil and fat but mainly by vegetable(olive) oil. A woven fibrous wick was placed in the hole at the tip of the lamp to burn the oil. This group of people includes the Greeks, Romans, Jews, Early Christians, Egyptians, Muslims, Syrians, North Africans, Celts, Gauls, Britains, and even some early Crusaders. The time period for oil lamps is approximately from 300 BC through 900 AD. Generally they are thought of as Roman or early Islamic oil lamps. The examples here are earthenware ceramic or clay lamps. Oil lamps were also made in various metals and in glass. The traditional Roman technique for making clay lamps was to press the raw clay into gypsum molds. The two halves of the lamp were put together and the two holes were made. The green ware was then trimmed by hand using small metal tools and then fired in an oven.
