This is a cold painted bronze chicken figure. It is about 3 ¼” tall. Heavy for its size and weighs a little over ½ pound(8.6 ounces on my postal scale) Marked on the tail feathers with GESCHUTZT and a 3 digit number that I can’t make out. There also is a mark on the side DEPOSE and on the rear a number that looks like 580? The piece is in used condition with some wear to the colors on the high spots. There are no breaks or repairs that I see. I was told that this was probably a Bergman Foundry piece from Vienna Austria around the early 1900’s? Vintage Studio Steinbock Austria container in white and black enameling with 24 karat gold plate detailing. The swirled detail design was inspired by the work of the Viennese artist Klimt. Klimts paintings were one of the main sources of design inspiration for Studio Steinbock. This is a wonderful, very high quality piece and is possibly a piece by Michaela Frey from the era where she worked at Studio Steinbock. The base metal beneath the enameling is brass. This container measures 3-3/8 inches high. The base measures 2-1/2 inches wide. The lid on its own measures 1 inch high. The interior of the lid is also beautifully decorated and can be used as a little dish on its own, just lovely. There is a Klimt-derived ... moreswirl design going all the way around the lid and also going all the way around near the top of the container. This item weighs 152.3 grams. On the bottom of this container is the original label that says STEINBOCK-EMAIL HANDMADE IN AUSTRIA. Condition: The enameling is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. There is some loss of the 24 karat gold plating along the line of decoration near the top of the container, this is normal wear for this kind of piece and does not stand out since the decoration is so profuse and busy. You can see this in the detail closeup pictures. There is also a bit of minor gold plate loss from a few of the flower petals, this also does not stand out on normal viewing. Achieving such a high level of detail on a rather small figurine requires a very complex and time intensive production process: Usually it starts with a rubber mould. Liquid Brass would destory the rubber and for this reason the figurine is in the first step casted out of wax. The wax figurine is used to prepare a negative made of some kind of plaster or clay: In a very special technique one or more wax figurines get placed inside a container. All that is covered with plaster or clay. The mould is dried and fired. This way the clay is getting hard while the wax is melting. A hollow space is created- the negative. This negative gets filled with liquid Brass. When the Brass is cooled down. It gets hard. The plaster around the brass core can be broken off and the figurines made of Brass are the desired result. These figurines will be cut off, their whole surface gets engraved by hammer and punch, and finally the items get marked with the traditional"Jug" mark and painted in a costly and detailled manner.
